Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Excellent writing, unique perspectives, good recipes
Review: I stumbled across this apparently out-of-print book at the library, while looking for James Beard, M.F.K. Fisher and the liked. Jacobs' writing is precise, informed, original, honest, and rather eclectic. His food interests are influenced by travels and living in - as I recall - Portugal, France, Brazil, the Caribbean, Virginia, and Pennsylvania.

He advocates in this book a rather cardially reckless way of eating, which to my mind is not the greatest sin of our day, but if you want to read some eloquent, honest, and personal perspectives on food, check it out. The recipes are tasty and simple, and are appended in the back of the book, rather than interspersed distractively in the main text.
