Summary: More than just a cookbook- "Letters To Brian" is great!
Review: This is a gem of a book! It is different from the usual cookbook, and one needs time to read it all the way through. Then, when you need to know how to cook something, go to the table of contents, and find it. You will find very basic, easy to follow directions, and possibly, some interesting insights, history of, even quotations about the food in question! I consider myself a good cook, having been "at it" for 40-odd years, but I had never known how the cantaloupe got it's name, or how a corn plant blossom is fertilized! This is a book that is a lot of fun, educational, and an "easy read" besides. Walt Wood employs a casual writing style, (as one does in a letter to a nephew), and urges the reader to KISS - an acronym that means "Keep it Simple - " because it works! This book will make a great gift for that college student who is learning to cook, a thoughtful shower gift for the bride-to-be, and appropriate for anyone of any age who must begin to cook for him or herself. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
