Summary: The one book every serious songwriter should OWN.
Review: This is the most comprehensive, well rounded book on the subject of songwriting by a man who is considered the formost authority by many. As founder of the Los Angeles Songwriters Showcase, John Braheny has earned the respect and admiration of the songwritng community at large.

What makes this book so powerful is John's unique ability to cover the craft of songwriting equally as in depth as the business end. Therefore, having this much information on both aspects of songwriting makes this my number 1 choice as a point of reference for all related topics. Think of this book as a very good investment if you wish to pursue songwriting as a career.

Summary: There are no rules for writing successful songs
Review: Through the first couple of years of critiquing and auditioning songs for the L.A. Songwriters Showcase, my partner, Len Chandler, and I looked for rules that would work, even most of the time. What I found in studying successful songs was that, instead of rules, there are several basic principles that detetermine how songs communicate effectively to listeners in a radio medium. In understanding the principles, your creativity is free to mix and match techniques, structures and inventive dynamics without having to adhere to hard and fast rules. You'll have greater freedom to create your own unique approach. I've always wanted to know WHY something does or doesn't work. This is the information I wanted to pass along in this book
