Rating: Summary: A must for all in love with the book and musical... Review: Absolutely one of the most comprehensive books available on the best novel ever written and the best musical ever created. The history of both Hugo's masterpiece and the unfathomably successful musical is told in a captivating and informative way with accompanying pictures. "Les Miserables: History in the Making" follows this musical from its birth, through its incarnations, and finally to what it is now--a musical that has been seen by over 40 million people, translated in over 15 languages, and is still alive 10 years later.
This book is worth every penny, and definitely a must for any Les Mis fan.

Rating: Summary: Behr's inaccurate plot summary of Hugo's novel Review: I'll admit that not all of Hugo's plot elements are plausible, but Mr. Behr exaggerates and even lies about Hugo's coincidences. He claims Gavroche did not know who his father was in the novel--this is false. Gavroche was perfectly aware that his father was Thenardier. Mr. Behr also says that, while the prison system was so hard on Valjean, it was surprisingly lenient on Thenardier, who was released from prison after a short time. In fact, Thenardier escaped from prison in Hugo's book. He was not released. (I'm surprised Behr missed the rather lengthy description of Thenardier's break out--a break out aided by Thenardier's son, Gavroche). Mr. Behr says that Valjean did not recognize Thenardier during the Gorbeau robbery (again false; he knew perfectly well who Thenardier was.)---and that Javert did not recognize Valjean. If Mr. Behr had actually read that scene in the book, he would have known that Valjean hid his face from Javert and disappeared before Javert had a chance to quesuion or even really look at him. There are more examples of Behr's inaccuracy, but I won't bore you with all the details. Just don't trust this book as an accurate portrait of Hugo's novel, which I doubt Behr has even read. This book is a nice history of the musical version of the story, however, and includes many beautiful pictures. Also, the complete libretto is in the back of the book.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful book for every Les Mis fan Review: If you are a fan of the musical LES MISERABLES, then I highly recommend this book to you. There is one fault, which is there are some mistakes in the plots in the book. But I love the beautiful photographs of the production, the story about the life of Hugo, Hugo's sketches, photos, and everything else that made this book beautiful. The full libretto is in the back on the book.
