Rating: Summary: I loved this book! Review: This is a really good book by somebody who knew Katharine Hepburn in her last years and writes about her with respect and humor and affection. I did not want it to end. It will go in my collection of favorites.
Rating: Summary: You can almost hear Kate's voice. Review: I don't understand why alot of critics don't like this book. I LOVED it and while your reading it you can almost hear the words being told in her voice.I'm from Connecticut and spend a great deal of my summer time down in Old Saybrook so maybe i'm looking at this book from that point of view. She was a wonderful, loving, kind, and very generous women. She kept her life private which i believe all people should do anyway. She was a wonderful actress and had affairs with great leading men. What more could you want in an icon like Kate. This book is worth every penny and i know we all miss her.
Rating: Summary: Going Through Kate's Life Review: This story could not have been written better! When I bought this book I was expecting somewhat of a good biography, yet it gives a better view than that. When going through her life, it give comments made by Katharine (notice the 'a')Hepburn for each movie and event. It talks about her birth, to her last movie-yet that was in Berg's own memory style because he was her friend during the making of "Love Affair." This is a glorious book that was written by a wonderful author, though when talking about his books I felt a little bit like this was an excuse to advertise his books and talk about Kate at the same time.
Rating: Summary: Kate Remembered Review: This book will make you laugh at her stuborn ways and weep when you read of her decline in health. Written by friend A. Scott Berg this "peek" into Katharine Hepburn's life is totally irresistable. Miss Hepburn's personality was so enormous that her own books "ME" and "THE MAKING OF THE AFRICAN QUEEN" read as if she were talking right to you. A very similar charm shines through here also! I loved this book and simply absorbed it when it arrived at my door!
Rating: Summary: Not so much a biography as a diary of a friendship Review: Mostly, "Kate Remembered" is Scott Berg's love letter to his mentor and friend. Hepburn shared her life with him through their decades-long friendship, yet made him promise that he would not release this memoir until after she had passed on. His recollections of their times spent together are moving, giving the world a unique look at a special lady we all long to know better and who we miss dearly.
Rating: Summary: Please spell her name correctly! Review: A nice book of remembrances for Katharine Hepburn fans. (Note: For all of you fans out there, please spell her name correctly if you're going to write a review!). I could have done without much of Mr. Berg's commentary on his other writing projects and sometimes the links between his contacts and Ms. Hepburn seemed a bit tenuous. All in all a nice read.
Rating: Summary: A Fan's must read! Review: This is a wonderful book that is a must read for any Katharine Hepburn fan. I think a movie fan, that likes the older movies, would like this too.I liked the fact that it wasn't a typical biography, names, dates, places events...boring, boring, boring, but was more like a personal memior. It was obvious that Ms. Hepburn cared for Mr. Berg, and of course Mr. Berg cared for Ms. Hepburn. It showed on every page,in every story. I enjoyed the gossipy tidbits, and the insights that Ms. Hepburn allowed the reader to see into her own life and feelings. Wonderful book, one I raced through because I couldn't stop reading, but I think I will read it again, slower, and savor every story and experience that Ms. Hepburn allowed us to glimpse in her life.
Rating: Summary: What we Hepburn fans have waited for Review: If you love the incomparable Kate as much as I do, then you've spent your life being disappointed by the printed material about her. The Kanin book had depth but scant content, Kate's own two books told us precious little about herself and were deliberately vague. But this book by Scott Berg is the real deal. To me, the most fascinating aspect of Katharine Hepburn was her legendary 26 year relationship with Spencer Tracy, the love of her life. It was only after Louise Tracy, Spence's widow, died in the early 80's that Kate finally felt comfortable to speak about Spencer in public. She spoke about him at great length over the years to Berg and he recorded her thoughts and conversations so we all can now savor them. Kate tells the familiar tales: how they met in 1942 on the set of Woman of The Year, the struggles with his alcoholism, the guilt he felt over his son's deafness, but she also reveals some new material. She confesses she never wanted to marry him and that Spence once struck her in the face when she was putting him to bed at the Beverly Hills Hotel in the early 50's. Did she confront him and expect an apology? Nope, Kate explains it wouldn't have done any good and Spencer had forgotten about it the next morning. Another example of her typical New England no nonsense approach to life. Berg gently tried to coax Hepburn into revealing her feelings about Spencer's brief affair with Gene Tierney, but Kate wouldn't bite. Throughout the book, Hepburn expresses her pride and adoration of Tracy, the man she said was as good and basic as a baked potato. The strongest parts of the book undoubtedly revolve around the Tracy-Hepburn partnership. Berg also gets Hepburn's reactions to various stars she worked with. She disliked John Barrymore, who barged into her dressing room naked in 1933 (she told him firmly to get lost). She loved working with Henry Fonda and, rather surprisingly, John Wayne. There's also some hilarious material about Michael Jackson and his "friendship" with Kate, which developed somewhat improbably in the middle 80's. Scott Berg met Jackson and the gloved one gushed how he was Hepburn's biggest fan. However, when Berg asked Michael what was his favorite Hepburn movie, he couldn't name a single title! Amazingly, Hepburn still had MJ visit after this painful admission. My one criticism of the book is that Berg talks too much about himself and this did grate on the nerves. When he went off on a multi-page tangent about himself and his own accomplishments, I just skimmed and resumed reading once Kate reappeared. Still, this is a marvelous read, a book you can easily complete in an evening. If you love Kate, this will be nirvana. If you know little about her, it's still essential reading to understand one of the great female cultural icons of the century. An amazing woman!
Rating: Summary: I couldn't put the book down! Review: This book is awesome! My thanks to Scott for sharing - with me - his friendship with Kate. She was such an elegant lady - and - after reading the book you can't help but feel that you knew her.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Look at a Great Lady Review: Miss Hepburn has always been my favorite actress and this book gives a great portrait of her day to day life. Yes, I know she was feisty and opinionated - but this book really showed it well. She was never shy about expressing her opinion and it is interesting to see her opinions of others in the "biz" like Michael Jackson, Meryl Streep, Glen Close, and Warren Beatty. It was just sad to read how someone so vital and active deteriorated as she grew older. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know the real Katharine Hepburn. Berg's 20 year relationship makes him an expert and he was a frequent guest of Miss Hepburn.
