Summary: Judy Garland magic as only John Fricke can deliver!.
Review: When it comes to Judy Garland very few can top the knowledge, wisdom and photographic visuals, pertaining to the legendary singer-actress, more than John Fricke. This book, as his others, is chuck full of advertising art and unseen photos going well beyond anything ever printed. His text is accurate and research thorough. For anyone who knows Judy Garland, or wishes to know the true artistry of her life and career, this is a treasure trove of information that delivers on all levels. Anyone who finds fault with his work is "wicked witch green" with envy by his stunning accomplishment. As far as Judy Garland is concerned he's her finest representative and delivers on all levels.

Summary: A Glorious Tribute To A Glorious Entertainer
Review: With a staggering wealth of never-before-seen photographs and artwork, and filled with scores of humorous, moving, and insightful eyewitness accounts by Judy Garland's co-workers, friends and family, this beautifully mounted tribute to the world's greatest entertainer will satisfy any true admirer of Garland's career- or other twentieth century phenomena.

Author John Fricke has not only thrown open his own vast archives to share, but those of private collectors and Garland's family as well. The results are fascinating: delightful Hirschfeld-drawn film posters and rare Kodachrome portraits share room with behind-the-scenes snapshots from the sets of her films (Peter Lawford carrying his laughing leading lady over puddles while filming "Fella With An Umbrella" from EASTER PARADE), and warmly personal moments with her family.

Fricke has written gently informative introductions to each decade of Garland's career, then immersed the reader in compelling accounts of what is was like to work with, live with, and laugh with her. Everyone from Fred Astaire and Roger Edens to MGM chorus girls and newspaper reporters are heard from, and this diverse assortment of voices create a richly layered reading experience for both loyal Garland fans and those who want to discover what made her so unique in the first place.

Wrapped up with crisp and deeply stylish art direction by Ranse Ransone, this Bullfinch Press production is well worth the (entirely reasonable) cost. Books of this printing quality, paper stock quality, and sewn spines are normally sold at a much dearer price than this. And once you take into account the gorgeous material reproduced inside, JUDY GARLAND: A PORTRAIT IN ART & ANECDOTE becomes priceless.
