Rating: Summary: In the vein of Rockwell & Vargas Review: This is a great collection of Gil Elvgren's work. This man was an expert at pin-up art in the World World II era He managed in capturing the innocence, playfulness, and seduction of the female form. He's definitely part Norman Rockwell and part Vargas, and it shows in his paintings. There's an underlying story in each of his paintings which is hard to accomplish.
Elvgren's early works are also presented in this 297 page collection, and I'm assuming this is one of the greatest and complete collection of his works. If you want a good coffee-table version of his works, this is definitely a 'can't-miss' book.
Rating: Summary: The best book of Gil Elvgren's art you can buy Review: This is a great collection of his work. There are few artists to rival his ability, not only in drawing the female form, but in capturing innocence, playfulness, and seduction all at the same time. He's been called the "Norman Rockwell of pin-up art" and in a way, it's a shame that he is limited to that category of art, but the comparison to Rockwell's ability is warranted. Some of Elvgren's advertising art is in this book too, and it is all well worth having.
