This award is based on actual readership, so it is an excellent indicator of the high quality of this title. You won't find a better choice of Flash MX titles.
Rating: Summary: Good Book for Learning Flash MX Review: As a newcomer to Flash, I've found this book to be very helpful. The author writes consistent, thoughtful explanations, and the tutorials are relevant and easy to follow. This book is giving me a good, overall look at the program, including the use of ActionScript. I've been so excited about learning Flash, and for me this book has been a great place to start.
Rating: Summary: Really great Flash MX reference! Review: As a professional Web developer, I wanted to get started using Flash MX quickly. The author of this book made this very easy for me. Rather than assuming that I already knew all of the inside tricks and techniques, he took the time to explain Flash MX fully. I'm going to recommend this book to all of my friends who want to learn Flash MX.
Rating: Summary: Buy, Read, Like, and Recommend Review: Buy, Read, Like, and Recommend - I normally buy the first book that is released on Flash, and in recent years, I have normally been disappointed by my impulsive decision. However, I am fairly pleased with this book, and I thought that I would contribute to the babble. This book is technically accurate, and the author knows what he is talking about. He moves quickly, while explaining concepts thoroughly. I know Flash, and I have benefited from his insight into the tool, and its native programming language, ActionScript. It could be bigger, if I wanted to render a complaint, including more coverage of interface design, sound, and dynamic Flash applications. Yet, all-in-all, it works for me.
Rating: Summary: Great to grep Flash Review: Currently I am half of the way reading this book. This is a great book to understand flash as a beginner. The author gave nice examples to work on and understand what's going on. I will vote for this book for those who don't have clue about Flash MX or Multimedia. I haven't started the action script part yet. So, I can't tell about that part. Tazim Khan...
Rating: Summary: Macromedia Flash MX: The Complete Reference, Tops Review: I am a professional web designer, and I have been using Flash since version 4. In version 5, the program made some great strides, but MX is the bomb. I bought this book because I always need a comprehensive reference for the desk, and I am happy to say that this book fits the bill. It could be bigger, but sometimes, books can be too big, which is also a problem. The author is very thoughtful and organized, and his explanations are crystal. If I had to make some recommendations, I'd say that the next version should have more high-end information. There needs to be more information on dynamic application design and components. I am a big fan of the bonus chapter on Toon Boom Studio, but the Canvas 8 coverage can go. No serious web designers use Canvas. Why 5-stars? Well, the author gets an A for effort, a B for thorough coverage, an A for clear explanations, and an A for knowing his stuff.
Rating: Summary: Not for advance user. Review: I am so disappointed that this book worth nothing for advance user. I don't think that this book has covered all the features of Flash MX. I expect this The Complete Reference book could save me time and money to learn Flash MX however this book failed its promises. I DON'T like this book!
Rating: Summary: Good Book, Excellent CD Review: I bought this book because it was the first book available on Flash MX. Needless to say, I pretty happy with it. The CD is really the highlight for me. It contains trial versions of Swift 3D 2.0 and Toon Boom Studio, two programs that I am interested in using. Beyond that, the author can really write. His explanations are very smooth, and he has a lot of insight into the tool. I am very interested in the new components feature, which should save me some headaches, and with his explanation, I was able to learn the ins and outs in a couple of minutes. I'd recommend this book, if you are looking for a thorough text on Flash MX.
Rating: Summary: Great buy! Review: I found this book tremendously usefull. I recently decided to get back into flash and I wanted to get working with the latest version. Macromedia Flash MX: The Complete Reference is very well written. The author's approach to educating the reader is both fluid and gradual making the program surprisingly easy to learn!
Rating: Summary: Boring and makes you feel like you read but didn't learn Review: I got my hands on this book and at first I was so excited because this was one of the first Flash MX 2004 books on the shelves so I just bought it immediately. After reading the introduction, I learnt that this book decided to not cover Flash MX 2004 Professional. Oddly, it wasn't a "Complete" reference after all. Nonetheless, I wanted to get my money's worth so I started reading on.
As much as the book seems to take a more text-based approach to explaining every tid bit of Flash, it fails miserably because it just seems like after reading 20 pages, you learnt something that could have been explained to you in merely 5 pages. I felt like I was wasting my time and eventually I just stopped reading the book, went out and looked for other books available.
If you REALLY want to learn Flash mx 2004, I'd suggest getting a book that takes you through tutorials rather than simply tells you what each thing does and runs you buy a tutorial the author does..
Oh and there is simply not enough screenshots or graphics to go along with the text, either they are uselessly detailed images or they simply dont exist.
I really hope I never come across another Flash MX 2004 book like this again. I wasted 384 pages worth of reading to this book and finally just let it go, I couldn't go on because it became so boring, reading it was like a painful job.
