Summary: Not Flash at all
Review: The book is so badly edited as to chop off the conclusions of some sections. Not surprisingly, several exercises make no sense whatsoever due to this (and are of no use to anyone).
The book is visually quite tough to use. It is hard to find a particular item. There are far too many typos and discrepancies between screengrabs and copy. Also the download page must be one of the oddest looking (and sloppiest) pages on the web - not a good advert for a company selling design books! Shame on you Osborne. What a waste of paper.

Summary: Wonderful Book!
Review: This book is extremely well written and organized with precision. The few questions that I had while reading this book were due to my simple oversights. The author, Bonnie Blake, is an excellent author who uses precise examples and leaves nothing unexplained. Bravo Ms. Blake!!

Summary: A good place to start learning Flash MX
Review: This is a well thought out book. It addresses all areas of Flash MX design and development without getting too bogged down with a lot of geek speak. It's structured very well too. It doesn't throw too much at you in one hit, takes things one step at a time, all the while reassuring you that the point will be covered in greater detail further down the track (which it does).

For someone who had never touched Flash before, this was a great start for me; though don't expect too much depth. Despite the title, there's only so much you can pack into 500 pages.

Watch out for a few errors in this book though. This is the only thing that lets it down. There's quite a few, particularly when you get to the Action Script sections. This can add a little confusion if you're not familiar with this stuff and can shake your confidence in the book's accuracy. Don't be put off by this though; it really is a good place to start.

I would have given it five stars if the proofreaders had done a better job.

Summary: Terribly written, organized - highly confusing
Review: This is simply a terrible book. As a few reviewers have mentioned, the organization is atrocious. There are sections on putting Flash on the web before you learn ANYTHING about Flash. Early chapters continuously assume that you know subjects from later on. Many of the descriptions of how to do things are simply wrong; I frequently had to stare at the screen agonizing over how to make something work, because following the description did nothing.

Do yourself a big favor and stay far away from this book.
