Summary: Response.
Review: This book represents Flash Communication Server MX version 1.0. Currently version 1.5 is available, with new Flash UI Components. There are significant changes to some of the ActionScript and components from version 1.0 to version 1.5. These changes may cause the code examples in the book to fail. Please review the release notes from Macromedia if you are having problems with the exercises.

There are updates (errata) and free code samples on the book website: http://flashcom.pangaeanewmedia.ca. Flash Communication Server MX is a complicated product with a lot of moving parts. I strongly recommend downloading the chapter examples, and installing them on your computer as you follow through the book.

Flash Communication Server MX is a powerful product, and this book will help you get the foundation you need to build incredible video conferencing, messaging and always-on applications using the Flash player.

Summary: Pathetic - Save Your Money
Review: This book was pathetic. Better detailed and more precise documentation came with the communication server software. The "excercises" in the book were almost identical to the sample applications provided with the software. Some areas of the book will lead a reader to confusion, example, page 341, section 9., the author indicates the reader should use "gotoAndStop," but his code immediately below reads "gotoAndPlay." ??? Another would be page 181, Figure 10.9 where the author indicates the example will require a 30 frame movie, but oddly enough figure 10.9 of his example movie contains 32 frames.??? So, which is correct? Lastly, ALL examples and code mentioned in the book, preface page xxix, as being on some site ARE NOT available as promised. Omissions and errors in a book about a product you are trying to learn is not the way to go, you will get lost. Save your cash and work with the documentation and examples provided with the software, not this pathetic piece. Happy Serving!
Gave the book 1 star b/c I bought it from Amazon.com, allowing me to warn others of a bad deal.

Summary: Caveat Emptor
Review: Unfortunately, this is the only book currently available on this promising new product from Macromedia. To be fair, it filled in some blanks for me. But if you buy it, be prepared to spend more time debugging the code in the book than your own code. It's full of errors and typos. And contrary to promises, none of them have been corrected or acknowledged on the book's web site. This book was obviously rushed into print with little proof reading or testing of the code. Let's hope some of the other books that are in the pipeline are better.

Summary: This book came early
Review: Unlike a lot of Macromedia books, this thing was published early, and was done quite well. I'd also like to add that, unlike a lot of other books with CDs and examples, this one actually has working examples on its website (I don't think even Macromedia has that), and you can download the code. Cheap too.
