Rating: Summary: An epic quest, an epic struggle. Review: BradyGAMES proudly presents the SaGa Frontier II Official Strategy Guide. I had the lucky fortune to be the author of this guide.SaGa Frontier II is a rich and rewarding RPG to play. Totally unlike its predecessor, SFII features hand-drawn backgrounds and characters, two different types of battle systems, and a story which chronicles three generations of the two most important families of a century. The game progresses much like a children's storybook, yet the story is as complex and political as any modern tale. The player proceeds through the game in segments, choosing each "chapter" by title from the world map. There are two unique storylines to follow, one featuring the legacy of a young man who failed to become King, the other featuring the quest of William Knights and his two ancestors to rid the world of an evil from beyond. As each chapter is completed, new chapters pop-up on the world map. There are many interesting stories to watch and to engage in, and many side quests to conquer. Gameplay features 2D characters moving in richly detailed 2D environments. The many screenshots to the right give you an idea of the fine quality of graphics. Combat features fully rendered 2D characters and enemies in vibrant 3D backgrounds, with camera angles panning all around the area as you engage in swift and deadly battles. Combat features two unique fighting systems. Team combat tests your skills to control a party of up to four characters against a team of baddys, and Duel Combat pits you against a single opponent. In both types, you must learn combat skills called the "Arts", and there are many types of arts for each type of weapon, plus Martial Arts and Spell Arts. Spectacular special effects accompany the use of all Arts. In Team Combat, you command each character to use the Arts against the opponents. In Duel Combat, you must "program" individual moves to execute new and learned Arts. Some Arts can only be learned and used in Team Combat, and the same goes for Duel Combat except that players may also learn higher-level Custom Arts as well. So there are advantages to becoming adept at both kinds of Combat, and it is a truly unique and rewarding system. The Official Strategy Guide from BradyGAMES will feature in-depth walkthroughs for the entire SaGa, chapter by chapter, in an easily referenced format. Arts lists feature the individual moves used in Duel Combat, so that you can learn the Arts more quickly and gain a much-needed edge. Also included is a complete section on the nature of "sparking", which increases the chances of learning a new Art by repeated use of a learned Art. Complete Item Lists tell you exactly where to look for the most powerful items and weapons, and how you can improve your character's chances to survive. The guide features complete strategies for defeating Bosses, and the Bestiary tells you how to hit your enemies where it hurts. SaGa Frontier II is a rich and complex RPG from SquareSoft, the makers of Final Fantasy VIII, Parasite Eve and Chrono Cross. Your only chance to master the game is the Official Strategy Guide from BradyGAMES.
Rating: Summary: Worst Strategy Guide ever Review: I am in agreement with the first reviewer -- I was extremely disappointed in the quality of this guide, it is very poorly written and ridiculously clumsy. I have purchased other Brady games guides and they were excellent, so I was very surprised they would publish such a lousy guide. I will be much more careful next time, and remember the name of Dan Birlew -- to make sure I don't make the mistake of purchasing anything he has "written." This guide turned me off so much I am hesitant to purchase any guides again. The low quality of this guide resulted in my eventually hating the game.
Rating: Summary: A rough guide for a rough game Review: The game alone was hard and a bit strange. But the guide doesnt help much. The maps are good, but thats about all the guide is good for.
Rating: Summary: Worst Strategy Guide ever Review: This strategy guide has pretty decent walkthroughs, as well as helpful arts lists. In particular, the sections on "sparking" are quite helpful. Unfortunately, there are several errata -- some of the command combinations for the arts are incorrect (3 of them, to be precise) -- just this little error caused me a good deal of frustration. Furthermore, there are an excesive number of errors elsewhere -- spelling errors, some of the "spark" charts are completely non-sensical, errors in the item listings on the area maps, incorrect attack powers for several of the arts, etc. I've purchased several other Brady Games strategy guides (Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and Tactics in particular), and I was very impressed with their thoroughness, appearance, and correctness. This strategy guide falls far short of that standard. Not only are there silly errors as stated above, the depth of information is disappointing. There are several aspects of the game only briefly mentioned that I think deserved more attention; in particular, the "roles" and their effects on learning arts, more information on combos (there is virtually no mention of this), and more details on the many factors that go into learning arts. In short, unlike other Brady Games strategy guides, this guide has little to offer above a simple FAQ that could be easily found on the web.
