Rating: Summary: A good book for learning Flash MX, especially videos Review: As a Flash MX newbie, I was looking for actionscript for a hierarchical menu that can be moved around the stage. I was lucky to find one working in one of the lessons on the CD. However, I had to go to another of his books (0-7645-1637-X) in order to see what is in the custom component! The QuickTime lessons are about 5 min long and are well produced and suitable for the topics for quick learning; watching the video clips is often faster and more lucid than reading the text. If you have them playing in the background, you probably can pickup some tips by osmosis ;-). I read this book at the local library. The author is well organized and a pleasure to read and watch his videos.
Rating: Summary: You Could Do a Lot Better Review: Doug Sahlin may be a great Flash user, but he would do well to stay away from creating vocal narratives. Nobody can be good at everything, Doug. Also, I guess I must have put on own spin on the term 'virtual classroom', because I was expecting there to be 'lessons' that would lead me through a series of 'assignments' that would lead to the accomplishment of a certain task, the goal of the chapter. This is how teaching in a real classroom might happen, but not here - there are step-by-step instructions for performing tasks, but they do not lead to any final goal.
Rating: Summary: Oh-hummm Review: Doug Sahlin's voice may put you to sleep on the CD-ROM. If you manage to stay awake, you will hear & see what he is doing but trying to duplicate it is another thing! Both the layout of the book & the content of the CD-ROM LACK LUSTER. The free stuff listed on CBTcafe.com made me a lot more excited & taught me more about Flash's capabilities than this book or CD. There are many Flash MX books out there - skip this one!
Rating: Summary: Terrific Concept Review: I picked up this book a few weeks ago after having struggled through Flash MX for the last couple of months. I am a graphic designer and I needed to hone my Flash skills. This book and CD were perfect in explaining things that seemed a bit obscure. I also purchased the MX Bible, which is okay for reference, but not for learning the application. I highly recommend this book/CD. The author has great style, wit, and the ability to make something complex seem easy. Now I wish he would do a virtual classroom for Fireworks, the next program I need to tackle!

Rating: Summary: Great Beginning Review: I thought the layout of the book quite logical for a beginner. I'm glad the author doesn't speak fast otherwise it would be difficult to follow for a beginner. I worked through the books tutorials then used the CD. The movies really did help me actually see how to perform the tasks taught and each of the movies was task oriented. I highly recommend this book to anyone just learning flash and wants to do so in a no nonsense way. Gets right to the point and teaches what you need to begin and understand the basic concepts of Flash.
Rating: Summary: This book is worth every penny Review: This is an excellent book and CD. I run my own web business and have created dozens of static sites for my customers. I've read some Flash books - they didn't help get me up to the same level of understanding and confidence like I have with Dreamweaver, Fireworks and Photoshop. This book is the best I've come across for Flash for the new user. The author's comments show he has an understanding of a working web developer i.e. customers always changing their minds etc and what this means for getting up to speed with a new application. After reading this book and viewing the CD (which is worth the money for the book alone) my confidence level in getting Flash to do what I want it to has really increased. I'm impressed and looking at getting the CD extra by the same author.
