Rating: Summary: One of the finest Review: There is no doubt that this is the best book in my (still small) chess library. Anyone who wishes to improve his game could not do better than own "My System". The idea of overprotection alone is exceedingly valuable, and Nimzovich's theory of pawn chains... I could go on and on. But the thing that makes this book stand out among others is that Nimzovich is so thoroughly readable. His chessmen have personalities and preferences, and he, a sense of humor. It is good also to own Tarrasch's "The Game of Chess," for he describes middle game combinations in great depth. For instance, how to capture your opponent's KRP with your KB and check, then check with Q-KR5 and capture an unguarded B at QR5 (which you may previously have driven there with P-QR3), winning a Pawn. But tactics are subordinate to strategy, and "My System" teaches strategy. If your strategy is correct, combinations will appear almost of their own volition. To put it in, as the saying goes, a nutshell, this book is a "must own" for any chess player.
Rating: Summary: Hate this book; don't go without it. Review: I know how difficult translations from German can be. However, I think the problem in this book does not stem from translation. It is the boring Nimzo's style that makes its reading so difficult. Yet, the full comprehension of his ideas will provide an unequaled insight on chess playing. Reading it once is not enough. Every time you read it you will find new ideas.
Rating: Summary: My System - Aron Nimzowitch Review: I went through many chess books and I regret not buying earlier this bible of chess. In my opinion there has been nobody else who can teach and explain so clearly chess strategy as Aron Nimzowitch did. Before I was a chess player with a solid style of playing, but I needed always to wait for a mistake of my opponent to decide the game in my favour. A lot of my games were ending in drawns. After reading My System I am going straight for the win. Results so far in 2000: 13 matches, 10 wins, 2 drawns and 1 lost. My System is a must for everyone who wants to become better chess player.
Rating: Summary: Study this book FIRST Review: Read this book FIRST. No other chess book can help you until you have read this one. Every chess book written in the last 50+ years assumes that you are familiar with the principles Nimzovich sets out in this book. If you want to spend the rest of your life losing at chess, never mind this advice. Otherwise, READ THIS BOOK NOW.
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: This Book went over all the general rules that my chess teacher taught me in greater detail. It also included more information on positional play and tactical information with great examples. The first section called the elements went over the basic tactics about the advantages of the bishop pair etc. The second section goes over more stuff about positional play. This book is easy to read and has 419 diagrams. You can probably read this books in your head without a chess board since i can(and i do not have very good visualization). This is a must buy;-)
Rating: Summary: One of the best chess classics I own Review: My System is must for every chess player who has started playing in tournaments. Even though the book was written long back the ideas are still very fresh and you can't afford to improve your chess without this classic. Minority attack, development strategies, outposts for knights, etc are beautifully explained.
Rating: Summary: This edition is probably good Review: I have an older copy in descripitve notation. From the other reviews, it appears this edition is algebraic. That should make all the difference in the world. My appreciation for this volume was seriously diminished by trying to adjust my thinking to the descriptive. I could see there was some good stuff in there. I'll probably get the new edition sometime. I'm a beginner player.
Rating: Summary: The best of the best for anyone less than an expert Review: I played chess for about 10 years before reading and learning my system. It will teach you the mental vocabulary you need to play chess well. I've bought and given away atleast 5-6 copies over the years to friends who wanted to learn to play well.
Rating: Summary: WOWSERS Review: Thank u Mr. Hays for publishing a fabulous version of My System by Aron Nimzowitsch. Before I came across this book and read the rave reviews of this edition I stayed away from My System, because A. It was in descreptive language and B. Because it used old stodgy language. I am so glad u came out with this book, because if it weren't for your edition I would have never picked up this book and would never would have been a true chess player. This is the staple of a chessplayer if u buy any chessbook this year make it this one!!!!
Rating: Summary: A chess master at work Review: My System is written by a GM and it shows! There is not a single wasted sentence. This is not a book to browse through and expect to absorb much - it needs to be studied. If you make that commitment it will offer more than can be absorbed in a single reading! Whatever your chess level, it will offer you new insights into the game of chess.
