Rating: Summary: ELLEN IS A BORN WRITER-COMEDIAN, AU NATURELLE Review: The first time I saw Ellen, (I mean really first time as she was not my favorite at all due to her lifestyle), was on her movie, "Mr. Wrong." I was laughing alone in my living room just seeing her face and listening at her dialogue. From then on, I surf the net for books or tapes of her and I discovered her website. I tell you, she is the only actress-commedianne, who can make me laugh as I am pretty critical or choosy. Her book,"The Funny Thing Is..." is basically what it says. Her personality comes right through. Her talent in writing coupled with her inviting persona makes this book and all her works worth your time and effort and investment. After my favorite, Carol Burnett in the 70's, Ellen is my "Queen of Comedy of the Millenium". Hurray, Ellen. Keep it up. "The Funny Thing Is....." soars to the heights!
Rating: Summary: Product Description Review: Sharply observant and brilliantly absurd, DeGeneres's unique voice made her first book a "New York Times" bestseller. Now she turns her attention once again to the written word, spinning simple observations into imaginative essays. Abridged. 5 CDs.
Rating: Summary: HILARIOUS Review: I just finished this today and I laughed the entire time. Ellen is the funniest person. Her outrageous scenarios keep you on your toes, especially the chapter "this is how we live". You really need to read this book!
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: I'm a big Ellen fan and was looking forward to this book. After sixty pages I lost interest and returned it to the store. It wasn't going anywhere and was too far out. I liked her first book a lot better. But the part about her Sunday brunch with Eminem and Diane Sawyer and the rest tried to be so outrageous but was dull. A lot of the meterial was already used in her HBO acts, which were great- I think she's better at stand up rather than writing.
Rating: Summary: HYSTERICAL! Review: This book is hysterical!! I laughed and laughed. There were numerous times that I nearly peed my pants!! BUY IT!!
Rating: Summary: plenty of fresh stuff Review: I'm a big Ellen fan, and baffled by some complaints that she has reused too much material from her stand-up in her new book - there are a few minor overlaps, ok, but the VAST majority of the chapters are not only completely fresh but HILARIOUS. THE BRUNCH BUNCH (in which she recounts her weekly brunches with Eminem, Diane Sawyer, Paula Abdul and other celebs)and PERSONAL HOME TOUR had me laughing out loud in public places. Her voice comes right through!
Rating: Summary: Wonderfully charming and smart Review: I read and liked Ellen's first book, and Ellen's new book is full of hilarious new stories and observations that I've never heard. You will find her outrageous tales and insights to be a delight. Ellen is a gifted and unique storyteller. I particularly liked her whimsical essay..The Brunch Bunch, and the story about her father taking her, as a child, to see houses they never end up buying. She also offers a very funny tale of visiting her therapist to go over The Things That Are Bothering Me This Week.Ellen is a fine observer of life: she seems to understand exactly what it feels like when we run into everyday obstacles. The Funny Thing...will make you smile on every page.
Rating: Summary: Recycled Material Review: While this book is probably enjoyable if you're not already an "Ellen fan," it is really all recycled stand-up material. I found myself skipping entire chapters because it was a word-for-word recount of previously used stand-up jokes. I have to admit that the jokes were funny, but I was hoping after paying $23 to get some new material. Also, in my opinion, what makes Ellen so funny is not necessarily her material, but it's the way she delivers the joke...her voice inflections, her facial expressions, and her subtle pauses. Without these additions the jokes aren't half as good for me personally.
Rating: Summary: Ellen is Great...but her book is a waste!!!! Review: I am a fan of Ellen DeGeneres. I have enjoyed her stand up as well as her new talk show...so when her book came out I was very excited to read it. But after reading it,I realized that much of her book was made up of jokes she used in her 2000 and 2003 comedy tours...NOTHING NEW!?! There is nothing original about this book. It's full of 2nd hand jokes that you can hear on HBO. Don't waste your money!!
Rating: Summary: Audiobook is the way to go! Review: Ellen is once again brilliant with her witty insights and creativity. I bought this as an audiobook on CD, since I saw that it was "read by the author." It was great to hear her stories and joke the way she intended them to be heard! If you're planning on buying this book, audiobook is definitely the way to go!
