Rating: Summary: Disappointment does not come cheaply Review: After hearing about this book, I , like many other matrix fans waited with anticipation for it's arrival. After weeks of delay it finally arrived and i bought it without even opening the plastic wrapping. When i got home and opened my prize i was shocked to find over 400 pages of rough and ugly looking storyboards. Apparently the wrapping was meant to hide this appalling book instead of protect it from damage... I realize it's an "art of" book but the poor quality of it was absolutely the biggest disappointment i've ever had with any movie tie-in book. What about the computer effects? the cinematography? this is also a great part of the art but is totally ignored in 400+ pages.(i guess i have to wait for "the making of the matrix" if it's ever published ) If you're into movie books and NOT comics stay away from this one. The day after i bought it i returned to the store.
Rating: Summary: The most amazing storyboard book I've ever seen Review: As a Marvel Comics fan, I always enjoyed the drawings of Steve Skroce. I always liked his dynamic style and the ballistic exaggerations he draws. When I knew that he was making the storyboards for "The Matrix" even before the movie was released, I was hoping for a book such as this. I pre-ordered the book as soon it was available for pre-order at amazon.com and I keep looking at each page, panel by panel. Is like an extraordinary comic book about the Matrix, with the superior quality of the drawings of Steve Skroce. Is a huge volume full of fantastic art and a must-buy for any comics/films fanatic.

Rating: Summary: Fantastic Book but Nothing from the Wachowski Bros Review: I have been waiting the release of this book since October 1999 and finally it has now arrived. The book is presented very well in a large hardcover format which really ads to the weight of the book. The cover art was the final choice of at least three changes since this book was announced and looks great. The information in the book is fantastic with both black and white storyboards as well as black and white plus colour concept art. It was very funny to read about the Wachowski Bros disdain of "action arrows" in any of the storyboards and we only see one or two of them. One of my favourite pieces of art in the book is the full art of the Nebuchadnezzar showing all the chairs where the rebels jack into The Matrix. The external shot of the Nebuchadnezzar is quite impressive as well, the detail is so incredible. The entire original script is featured in the middle of the book as well as info on deleted scenes (the lobby shootout was originally meant to be in the lobby of a hotel with patrons diving for cover with the main actual shootout occurring on the roof of the building). Zach Staenberg gives a nice little opening article and others including John Gaeta feature throughout the book. My biggest disappointment though was that the Wachowski Bros themselves have not written anything in the book (other than the entire original script). I was hoping to see some insights from the brothers in the book, but like the extra features on the DVD there is no sign of them. This is why I have given the book 4 stars not 5. Is the book still worth getting? Absolutely! Any Matrix fan should list this as a must have and devour it cover to cover as I have. Agent Martin
Rating: Summary: Good for budding and aspiring writers or comic book fans Review: I have to stress this out, this book is good mostly for the hardcore fans of the movie who happen to be admirers of comic book genres. The man attrction of this book is definitely the storyboards and conceptual designs done in the tradition of a comic book renderings. The combination of the shooting script and the storyboards give you a glimpse on how to sell ideas to a studio on such a hard-to-grasp-concept as The Matrix before it became a movie. It does not go to much to the behind the scenes stuff, probably because they want to advertise that this movie is propelled by their creators' love for graphic novels and visual strengths of the comic book genres. Maybe in the future it can inspire anyone with good hard-selling script to create the storyboards in order to sell tothe studios.

Rating: Summary: You can not be told what the Art of the Matrix is Review: I ordered this book over a year ago. Delay after delay, and I still was surprised when the book came out. This book is massive. Picture upon picture from the storyboards to conceptual drawings plus the shooting script. You'll be amazed by the amount of information they threw into it. If you are as big a fan of the film as I am, you'll have to have this book. With a word or two from the artists, and a page from William Gibson. Who could ask for more? Just get it, you won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: If you love this movie, you will need this book... Review: I picked this book up at the Fangoria convention in NYC the other day, and I was amazed. It has everything you could possibly want to know about the creation of this brilliant masterpiece. The price is high, but it's definately worth the money!

Rating: Summary: showcase of genius Review: I was hoping the book would deal with the filming and post-production aspects of the movie, but they're apparently saving that for a later book (that will only be written if this one sells!). This one is almost exclusively pre-production, but even that is well worth seeing. The Wachowskis went all-out on the script, including scene after scene that they had no idea how to film at the time. The storyboards had to brilliantly showcase the action, mood, and intensity of the story just to get the go-ahead from Warner Bros to commit such a large budget. It's depressing how most Oscar-winning movies are just a bunch of talking heads when you can page through this book and see such hard work and ingenuity in scene after scene. At least they got rich off it!
