Rating: Summary: You will start killing them after reading this Review: I started doing stand-up after taking a class. I must say this book was better than the class! Everything you need to develop your own funny monologue. Even if you decide not to pursue a career as a comedian, you can improve your sense of humor which will help you in your communication skills. What is funny is usually something with a surprise at the end. Another funny topic is a known truth that society tries to keep under the rugs. The life as a comedian is rough, no pay and minimum required guests (at least in NYC). In addition to excerpts of monologues from famous comedians, this book also offers encouragement to beginners. It was told that during Arsenio Hall's first time at stand-up, he walked out the door when they announced his name. So don't feel bad if you get nervous.
Rating: Summary: Like a college course, with homework assignments. Review: I wanted her to teach me, not just talk about her experiences. I wanted examples of good and bad lines and jokes. I wanted to know how to judge a good line from a bad one and how to change bad to good. I got it all. She writes well about all of the topics. She is a good writer, funny, believable, and encouraging.
Rating: Summary: Aspiring Comedians: Read This Book! Review: If one is at all interested in becoming a standup comedian, or simply becoming a better public speaker this is the best book on the market. In my quest to become a stanup comedian at the age of 17 this book was recommended to me by the manager at Caroline's in NYC and by several of the comics back stage. A must-read for anyone having toruble getting started in the world of stand-up.
Rating: Summary: This book got my career on it's feet. Review: If you have the desire, if not the know-how, to perform stand-up, this book increase the former and deliver the latter. The easy steps of developing matterial generate quality routines that club owners want. This book got me off my duff and on stage where I get paid for my personal dementia.
Rating: Summary: Old Humour Review: If you really want to buy this book then dont. Buy her latest book, The Comedy Bible. Its basically an updated version of this one. I ended up buying 2 books because they both have different titles. I wasnt impressed. Why not just update this one. No she has to update it and give it a new title. Not very funny at all.
Rating: Summary: The best "how to" for aspiring comedians! Review: Judy Carter gives in detail what it takes to develope ones own act for stand up comedy. Her tips and workshops are great stepping tools that allow those that find it hard to free associate begin to. Stand-Up Comedy: The Book, does not leave the reader alone with tools to become a comedian but also advice. From getting up there for the first time and the "no's" that go along with that, to the booking of your first major performance, she gives all the advice one needs. If you so desire to be a comedian than this book is a must
Rating: Summary: Fall out of your seat funny Review: Judy Carter is an LA legend! Known coast to coast as an excelent teacher and standup comic. The industry respects her and so do the comics. This is an excelent book. It tells you how to create material. How to do act outs always a crowd pleaser. and so much more. I also recomend her courses and Tapes and cds. Also the tips from the pro's in the book are very helpful.
Rating: Summary: No substance Review: Judy seems to think that you can't teach someone to be funny but that is not true. By teaching somebody how to find humor within a topic you teach them to be funny. Comedy is not always about you and your problems either. Though you can get some good material from this, if that's all you talk about on stage then your not as good as you could be. I have researched and found very specific technical methods for digging funny material out of anything. Judy tells you if your life doesn't suck then you can't be funny. I completely disagree. Bill Gates could do standup if he wanted to.
Rating: Summary: 'THE BOOK' to get you started !! Review: Okay, you've decided to give stand-up a whirl, one problem -- you have no material.
Lets see, no material ... no experience.
Stand Up Comedy: The Book simplifies the world of stand up and gives you a great base to start from. The workshop exercises give you the edge over those comedians using a 'trial and error method' and will help ease the terror of that first open mike!
Give this book a read first!
This is the easiest method of dredging that funny material into a great opening monologue.
