Summary: Great Beginners Book!!!
Review: Along with most of the other reviews on here, I agree that this is a great beginners book. It doesn't get too much into detail about higher limit games, but beginners don't need to worry about that yet. It does a great job of explaining different types of major poker games. It also tells you a key aspect of the game that I think it equally as important as knowing the game, and that's self control and money management. The glossary in the back is also useful. The only down side to this book is it doesn't get into great detail on betting structure. When I first read this book, I noticed the most popular low limit game fo Texas Hold 'Em (1-4-8-8), is not really talk about. Overall, if you are new to the game of Poker, and want to learn the essentials, GET THIS BOOK!

Summary: Absolutely Super Poker Book!!!
Review: I have read many fine books on Poker. Three of Sklansky's, Jones's, Hellmuth's and others. This book however is my favorite and it really worked for me. As a beginner, I won, and won more - following this likable text. The third time I ever walked into a casino (Oceans-Eleven, in Oceanside, CA) for my first Texas Hold'em tournament ever, I came in fourth place out of a crowded Saturday field, and won $525.00! I was awed making it to the final table. The guys I was playing against were extremely experienced (the guy who won it, Paul Rowe, was 4th in the 2002 Legends of Poker Tournament, and he has won at the 4 Queens, LA, and other places you can see on the internet - with three terrific finishes at Binion's WSOP). I made it to 4th place against guys like him - by following the Tournament Play chapters towards the end of this book. Honest to god. What more can I say? This book caused me to have one of the most memorable experiences of my life. This book should be on top of the list of books for people starting out in Texas Hold'em, and other Poker games.

Summary: PERFECT FOR THE RECREATIONAL PLAYER
Review: I have recently left the arena of recreational poker player in home games and low-limit casino poker. I have moved up a notch and have become what I call a semi-pro poker player. An important book that helped me immensly was this book (and others) by Andy Nelson. This WINNER'S GUIDE gave me basics. It is filled with solid advice and information on how poker should be played. It describes the games usually played in today's world. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is beginning and wants to improve. By the way, it makes an excellent gift to a spouse or friend who wants to make money playing poker.

Summary: Unique blend of personal observation and strategy
Review: I play this game we call poker several nights a week and usually do pertty well at it, I might add, I read about the game, lots, sometimes for just the amusing stories, but mostly for help. There's many books buy all sorts of authors, but one of my favarites is by Andy Nelson called "A Winners Guide".It's unique in the fact that he blends personal observations with large doses of strategy that I can refer to without becoming bored with all the math and dryness of others I've read. It's a book I can really use and enjoy, a rare combination for sure.

Summary: An excellent book for any poker player
Review: I read this book entirely through the day I got it, and then a second time a few days later. I then tried out Mr. Nelson's suggestions and strategies at a local card room. My play improved 1000%. I was seeing things I'd never noticed before. I caught myself several times thinking about staying when I should be folding. One trip to the poker room saved me the cost of this book five-fold! Thank you, Mr. Nelson!

Summary: Accessible and clear
Review: I've read several introductory books on poker in my attempt to improve my game, and this is the one I would recommend to all beginners. It is clearly written and enjoyable to read. Two things this book had that most don't are a discussion of the "home game" and a list of other poker resources. I've ordered Nelson's 1st book on hold 'em and am looking forward to reading it.

Summary: FOR BEGINNERS ONLY
Review: This book contains information that is for the most part correct, however it geared strictly for beginners. If you are at all familiar with casino poker then this book is probably too basic to be of much value. Concepts and advanced stratagies needed to beat 10-20 games and up are not covered in enough detail or depth to help you against todays well educated player. Good for someone who plays in a friendly home game once a week for fun. If you really want to become an expert you will need to find books specific to the type of poker your playing. Try books by mason malmuth and or david sklansky.
