Summary: A Classic, Must-Have title
Review: This is another great, inexpensive Dover title that I think is a must have.

The games explain the reasons behind the moves, and the strategy behind the moves. I should emphasize strategy, because Chernev illuminates the ideas behind the winning moves.

It is a bit more difficult than Logical Chess, Move by Move, but unfortunately that Chernev classic was out of print the last time I checked.--Actually I just checked here and it's in print again. Unfortunately it costs a bundle (unlike the out of print Fireside edition). It's worth looking for used, but buying it for the costly price is worth it if you start this book and find that you aren't getting that much out of it.

After logical chess, then this is the next book in terms of increasing difficulty and understanding.

Another must read is Chernev's Capablanca's best chess endings. Get that one after you finish this one...

Summary: Positional Chess--With Pow!
Review: This is one of my all time favorite chess books. I've gone through it many times, playing over all the games. Chernev was not considred one of the strongest masters, but he knew how to make the game of chess come alive for ordinary players. His joy in the game is infectious. I strongly recommend this book for both instruction and enjoyment.

Summary: Extremely Instructive and Thought Provoking
Review: Throughout my studies of the game, I have heard or read time and time again statements like, "Put your rooks on the seventh rank," "Control all the weak squares," and "Dominate the center." These statements are well and good, but only if one is skilful enough to apply them. This book is truly great in that the illustrative games, as well as the insightful commentary, show the student exactly how to accomplish these goals. Chernev's style of writing is concise and helpful. This book will improve one's ability tremendously. I highly recommend this book to beginners and intermediate players alike. For once, a chess book that truly lives up to its title!
