Rating: Summary: Good beginner-level book Review: This book is adequate for players rated upto 1600,maybe even 1700. This is the only Pandolfini book I care for. There are one or two typos, but no problem otherwise.
Rating: Summary: Very good collection of endgame situations/puzzles Review: This is a book that has numbered and named ("Queen and Rook Roll" , "Diagonal March" etc.) endgame problems on each page with a solution directly beneath the diagrams. The problems are very instructive, practical and clearly explained. It starts at the very basic mating problems and covers all 5 piece endgames. The problem with this book is that some endgames that are complicated enough to require several pages to explain (like KBN vs K or KQ vs KR) are chopped up into seperate problems which makes it harder to read. Overall: There are a lot of books that cover basic endgames like this one. If you need to learn the basics of 5 piece endgames and you like the one page one problem setup this is a good book for you.
Rating: Summary: Nice simple endgame book Review: This is a nice beginner book on endgames. It teaches the basic endgames and moves quickly from problem to problem. My only problem with the book is that it is a little incomplete. For example, when it showed how to checkmate with a knight and bishop it assumed that the opponent would make the best possible move at every step. Sometimes the opponent could make a weaker move, but if you don't know how to exploit it he will escape. So the book should show more alternate lines
Rating: Summary: Great introduction to endgames! Review: This was the first endgame book I read through (and went back over and over again). Each page has an important endgame position diagrammed and explained (I like to have a board and pieces in front of me, too). Each page is an important chess lesson! The positions later in the book build on ideas introduced early on. Once you reach the end you have a solid foundation for playing and studying endgames. I attend a local chess club and have been able to employ the lessons right away. The format makes it easy to recall the material while you are under combat conditions - especially in tournaments! (I would add that if you are not in time trouble in the endgame, slow down, and try not to move automatically. Endgames can be understood, but a quick move can quickly turn a sure win into a disappointing draw). If you want a place to begin endgame study, this is it!
Rating: Summary: Chess is the endgame. He who knows the end, wins. Review: When chess is played among equals, it normally ends up going to the endgame. And, whoever knows the endgame will win, for real chess begins in the endgame. I don't want to overstate the matter, but a weak knowledge of opening can be made up with a decent knowledge of endgame principles. This book shows the basic concepts (which constitute a finite set!) needed to win in the endgame. This book may be one of the best chess resources I own. For overall chess play, I recommend Jeremy Siman's "The Amateur's mind."

Rating: Summary: A great endgame book to help anyone get to expert strength. Review: When I first bought this book, I did not know what to expect but once reading through it I learned a lot. I am a class A USCF player and STILL benifited from this book. I never knew some philidor rook endings. Like Queen vs Rook. I didn't even know the proper way to mate with 2 bishops. If you want to be an expert you must know material like this. Get it!
