Summary: This book is a labor of love.
Review: Getting this book to you was a several year "labor of love" between the band, Lance, and myself. We wanted to maintain full control over the editorial, design, and manufacturing in order to bring you the highest quality book at a fair price. Unlike most "fan" books which are loaded with grainy press photos, vacuous text and cheesy graphics, this is a true photo book in the sense that the art of the photography takes precedent. I would like to give kudos to designer Hank Trotter (Screaming Life) for his fantastic layout: clean, classy, and timeless. This is a book that will never grow old. We had hundreds of photographs to choose from and could never have done it without Hank's editing prowess. So I hope you enjoy this book as much as we do. And by purchasing this not only do you get a wonderful document of Pearl Jam (who are turning out to be gems in a music industry increasingly full of rocks), but you also directly support the endeavors of the band, Lance and myself. Thank You, Charles Peterson

Summary: Rising above hardships, alas a chronicle of a band we love
Review: I am so happy to see this book. Pearl Jam have deliberately avoided the camera for several years( hoping to limit overexposure), and so we have seen the same photos over and over. What a pleasure to have so many new ones, all so beautifully done. I hate to buy unauthorized stuff, so it's great to have an official book to buy, so I can support the band. This book is excellent, better than any of the other stuff I have seen. You have got to buy it!

Summary: This book is the truest depiction of Pearl Jam I have seen.
Review: I just got Place/Date today, and I am amazed. A picture truly speaks a thousand words. With the absence of writing you are left only with the images of the band, some of which speak louder than any words anyone could write. The photography is top notch, each picture is a masterpiece. Each time I flip through it I find something new. This book is the most faithfull biography of Pearl Jam ever produced.

Summary: Just Once!!!!!
Review: I like Pearl Jam. Really.

And I like this book. Really.

It's just that ... well ... let me be honest here: great photography, interesting camera angles, and the B&W/color shifts are stellar and create a lasting effect; I just wish that once --just once -- the focus could shift to the viewpoint(s) of every OTHER member of the band besides Ed Vedder (the only time you really see it is in the photos of the fans -- for that, the book loses a star. Sorry, folks!). Maybe a sequel would be nice -- call it "Those OTHER Guys" and make them the subject matter.

Still, this is a book worth having. Very recommended.

Summary: a couple of wonderful photographs
Review: I love Pearl Jam's music, but, they do take themselves a bit too seriously. A few of the photographs (a color band grab in Istanbul '96 is wonderful) show them as people and as a band. The standard guitar and/or Christ poses are a bit much.

While you're at it... try buying their music, like Yield, easily their best work.

Summary: okay if you don't mind pretense
Review: i was looking forward to this, but found it a little disappointing. the photography itself, which is granted, nice, seems the focus, as opposed to the photo subjects themselves. perhaps this was intended, but i'd have preferred photos that were more revelatory and that really showed the band in a new light than so much blurry, artsy pretense. the scrabble picture was funny, though.

Summary: Beautiful Photography, Unparalleled Emotion
Review: Mercer and Peterson have collaborated with the band to offer a glimpse into the on and off-stage lives of Stone, Jeff, Ed, Mike, and (insert drummers' names here). The photographs alternate between B&W and color and integrate a variety of vantage points, camera angles, and photography techniques, not to mention an intruiging array of subjects, including drummer Jack Iron's son, Vedder's wife Beth Leibling, and many captures of fans. It is a lovely addition to the library of any Jammer.
