Summary: Nanci Griffith passes on a vital history of folk music.
Review: "Nanci Griffith's Other Voices" is a completely special book to me. As an editor, it was a dream come true to work with a woman whose music has meant so much to me over the years. She is an artist of integrity, passion, and great strength and beauty. Her voice has influenced politics and inspired people throughout the world. This book provides a much needed view into the working artist's heart and soul. Through Nanci's own writing and Joe Jackson's interviews with the many, many artists involved in the "Other Voices" projects (Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett, Odetta, Pete Seeger, etc.)one begins to understand just how vital, how important the tradition of folk and pop music is. I just can't imagine the world without it. The photographs provide a bird's eye view of the recording sessions themselves as well as Nanci's youth and incredibly impressive career in the music industry. Some of the photos came from Nanci herself and give the book an incredibly personal and intimate feel.

I hope this book entertains, educates, and most especially inspires those to read it to sing out! The world can always use more voices raised in song and celebration.

Summary: Arguably biased as I am Nanci's co-author. Even so...
Review: As Nanci's co-author I've waited more than a year to add my comments to this Amazon site. Even so, as a music journalist who has interviewed many of the world's most popular musicians I would still say that Nanci, despite her personal quirks and the restrictions she placed on our book, is one of those rare artists who reminded me that music can be a form of substitute religion in our God-less age, something that can make the soul either fly, or die. In that sense alone it was a privilige working with the woman. And if even one reader's soul can be redeemed as a result of my collaboration with Nanci Griffith then all the grief and pain that went into this book was more than worthwhile.

Summary: Folk Music Lives!
Review: For those of us who hung out in coffeehouses in the 60's and 70's, this books brings us back together. It is wonderful to know that some of my folk heroes live on through Nanci Griffith's ambitious project. She has gathered some of the finest musicians/songwriters and this book speaks for them and from them. It is a great companion to the two CD's and a wealth of insights on why Nanci chose the particular songs. For me, it was also a good way to become better acquainted with this woman of artistry and vision. Enjoy, folk lovers!

Summary: Essential reading for all who love good music!
Review: I am privileged to own all 15 of Nanci's albums but this is the first time I have found such an excellent book. It has added to my enjoyment of the two "cover" albums and has led me to discover the music of others (e.g. Kate Wolf, Iris De Ment)which is clearly one of Nanci's intentions. Joe is a great collaborator. His feel for the project is excellent and he avoids intruding on the project.

Review: I first discovered Nancy while living in remote Beaumont, TX, USA. the air was polluted, the three points of life considted of work, church, family. Being single, working for Mobil (uncaring company) I had only one pillar of life - Church.

To fill in the other points: I choose Nancy & her music. Life has been grand ever since.

This album continues the long line of excellent song writing and great voice.

I encourage everyone to listen to the words and float on the music.

Review: Nanci Griffith is something of a buried treasure. Those who have discovered her music wonder how they ever got along without it, and through this book Nanci tells the stories of the music she discovered through the years, discoveries that made her what she is today. The book's primary focus is a song-by-song discussion of her album "Other Voices 2", but the earlier (and better) "Other Voices, Other Rooms" gets a similar treatment. Given the absence of popular material that discusses folk music's history generally, this book, like Nanci herself, is a great find. But you probably already know that....
