Rating: Summary: An very personal account of a man who survived the Holocaust Review: Spiegelman interviews his father as he is writing this book. It is not only a story about his father's experiences as a Jewish Pole during the Second World War, but also how it is still affecting his father's values and behavior. You will be shocked by the straightforward and sometimes gory details he describes from memory. A very inspiring, thought-provoking story of hope and survival.
Rating: Summary: Slanderous simplification of the Holocaust Review: I wonder what would the Jewish circles say if somebody published today a comic book with Jews depicted as, say, rats (actually, the Nazis have already done that...)? "Maus" shows the Poles as pigs, and it does that in the context of over 220 trees (the largest national group) planted in Jerusalem in memory of the righteous Poles who saved Jews during the war at the risk of their own and their families' lives. Now the descendants of the saved ones pay the Polish people back...
Rating: Summary: Maus brings the Holocaust experience to a human level. Review: I happened upon Maus in the public library and was instantly captivated. Mr. Spiegelman has written down his family's experience in a way that is touching, heartwrenching, and compelling. I look forward to using this book in my work as a child therapist, with adolescents. The format will capture their interest in a way history books cannot. This contribution to literature is especially important now, considering the resurgence of white supremacist propaganda.
Rating: Summary: Great for insomniacs Review: The primary reason I picked up this book was because it was one of the only books in the Holocaust section of my library. For months I had passed it by, not even picking it up to glance at the cover, and little did I know I was missing a great book. When I finally did pick it up, I read the whole thing in the same afternoon. I admit I was not as impressed with Maus I's sequel, but both books are very good. It gives a true aspect of the Holocaust. Now if Disney and Miramax collided...
Rating: Summary: Read this book. Please. Review: The time is 7:12 pm, June 25th, 1999. I finished reading this book about ten minutes ago. Yeah, I read all of these reviews, yes, I'm going to say that this book is great and everything, and it really is. I'm not going into details, I'm just gonna tell you straight. I read this book in ninety minutes flat. It was that engrossing. Before I picked it up at Barnes and Noble this afternoon, I found it difficult to believe that "Maus is a book you cannot even put down, not even to sleep." But it really is. I read and read and read until I was looking at the back cover. Tomorrow I'm going to buy volume two.
Rating: Summary: Incredible, but not for young children. Review: I found both Maus books incredible in their description of the Holocaust, and the experiences of the Spiegelmans'. I learned a lot from this series. I would recommend this book for older teens and adults. Due to the graphic description of the atrocities that occurred during the Holocaust, I would not recommend this book for small children (or others) who are not emotionally prepared for this serious topic. I think if parents choose to let their children read this book, they should also take the time to discuss it with their children.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: I read both these books when they first appeared and have continued to enjoy them ever since. A vivid, accurate, human account of the Holocaust. Not reading these two books will leave any examination of the Holocaust incomplete. Wonderfully done, in an engrossing and fast paced style. Quick Comment to the reviewer(s) who gave 3 stars: Your grasp of the English language (or total lack thereof) is amazing. The books were in no way fanciful, as implied, and a little careful reading would clear up your ignorance.
Rating: Summary: Cool book Review: MAUS is a facinating book. Mr. Spiegelman did an amazing job making a novel out of a cartoons. The different animals used were extremly creative.
Rating: Summary: Clever and Amazing Review: I thought the book was extremely clever and well done. Once you start reading, you are hooked!!! This unbelievable story has you holding your breath. I reccomend this book to everyone!!!!
Rating: Summary: Life Story of a Survivor Review: The book "Maus" shows the life of a holocaust suvivor. It is a true story. There was no overstatement or real fun stuff that catch the reader's attention or make feel exiting. And also it is not good writing when I see the "Maus" in novel's view. Terefore, I think the book "Maus" is not good comic book and also not good novel. However, I think it is great, because the author created a new genre that appeals to many different people.
