Summary: An superb book for beginner & seasoned Bridge Players!
Review: "Spades For Winners" is a really neat book, and an excellent primer for the novice and experienced Bridge player. I would never recommend this book as a teaching guide for most Spades players - except those at the Expert level... However, if you are learning Bridge, you will find many wonderful strategies here. Everything is covered - Bidding, play of the hand, finessing, trump management, endplays, crossruffing, unusual discards, opening leads and defense. It is obvious that Fleishman is an accomplished Bridge player, and it shows. Forgot about all those fancy Bridge books - learn from the Spades Master. Who needs all those old timey conventions? Transfer bids key card, and Ace-asking bids are now obsolete. Just pick up this book, and learn everything you need to know about Bridge. ! Move over Goren, Kantar, Jacoby, and Lawrence. Spades for Winners will revolutionize Bridge, and bring the ACBL back to its glory years. Fleisman's concepts are here to stay. If you want to become a Life Master and win some big time cash Prizes at "live" events, then grab "Spades For Winners" -pronto! - And you will find that this book will also make you a very advanced Spades player as well. It's like getting two games for the price of one. What a book, what an author........

Summary: Very confusing and hard to understand...
Review: "Spades for Winners" is very long, very difficult to read, and very boring. I am 12 years old, trying to learn the game of Spades. I read another spades book, and really liked it. It was really an awesome way to learn the beginners' rules..
Then I wanted to learn more about the game. My sister gave me a copy of Fleishman's Book, and I was not able to get past the first few chapters. I felt like I was reading some of my Dad's technical work manuals. He is an engineer, and he was also unable to understand all of the gibberish (as he called it) of "Spades For Winners". ... Do not buy Mr. Steve's book, as you will be left in the dust.....

Summary: For Experts Only!
Review: "Spades For Winners" is written with the expert in mind. For those who play on an advanced level, this is the book for you. However, if you are new to the game, or have played for a few months, I suggest that you check out some of the other books which are out there. Spades is a relatively simple game, and there are lots of us plyaers who want to enjoy the game without worrying about fancy plays or counting every card in every suit!
Fleishman's book is onerous, excessively wordy, full of redundancies, nd just too complicated. The hands are intersting, but the rambling discussion about technique just wears on the nerves. 344 pages is just too much! Some of the plays which are featured are so rare and exotic, that you would be lucky to see them once every five years in real life play.
Buy this book if you are good - real good - or are planning to play in a Cash Prize event. Otherwise, check out a good Internet Spades Site. On the other hand, if you have 6 months of free time on your hands, then buy this book and enjoy!

Summary: CLOSE - BUT NO CIGAR!
Review: "Spades For Winners" is a lot like the "Engine the Could". I received a copy of this book from a friend who attended a "Spades Party" Tournament. "Spades For Winners" gets off to a good start with a nice chapter about the basic elements of the game. The history of Spades is fascinating - especially since I thought the game descended from Euchre. The "bagging vs. setting concept" is well presented. From there, it goes downhill rapidly. Some chapters are redundant. "Trump Management" is good, but I have seen this theme in another recently published book. Then comes an overwhelming number of hands and diagrams with very wordy and tedious analysis. I like the approach of seeing only one hand - as you never see all four hands in an actual game.
Some of the explanations are ambiguous, and several hands are flawed and not consistent with the the text (play by play). I stopped at page 150, and was not even halfway through the book!
"Yes I Can", "Yes I Can", I kept saying, but my mind was swimming with too much "technicalese". The book design is very pretty - but the price is a bit hefty. Spades For Winners might be the "advanced edition" of the other books on the game that are out there. Still, I give this book three stars, as I did help me to get get started in a really cool card game.....

Summary: CLOSE - BUT NO CIGAR!
Review: Even though I'm overwhelmed by all of the new strategy, this book has been extremely helpful! I have played Spades for nearly 25 years, yet it's now clear to me that I was playing completely wrong. I now win far more games than before, and I have a much better grasp of how to consider the entire hand rather than each play. I've even been winning tournaments on Yahoo! I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to take their game to the next level!

Summary: Simply the best !!
Review: Finally someone who understands the game and it's mathematical underpinnings has put his knowledge down on paper. It's concise, to the point and intelligently presented. If you want to understand how top-flight bridge and spade players manage their cards, this is the book. Steve very methodically lays out the underlying principles and proceeds upwards thru the beginning and intermediate concepts. Numerous hands to demonstrate the points being discussed along with detailed analysis of the bidding and play accompany the ideas.
This is without a doubt the best of the 3 spades books I've come across. If you want to play aggressive attacking spades, this is where you start. And as in all partnership games, it's much more enjoyable when you have a like minded partner across the table !!

Summary: Excellent spades strategy book
Review: I knew from the first minutes of reading this authors spades tips that I had found the book that I wanted.

I had previously purchased 2 different spades books and found them very disappointing. I was already a good, experienced, spades player and was not interested in studying the obvious and rehashing beginning spades techniques.

This book offered me expert spades strategy that I could immediately put to use. He very effectively taught me how to be an agressive, smart, competitor. My skills quickly advanced. Now I can honestly say that I am not just a good spades player, but an advanced spades player. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about learning how to play with the best.

Summary: Read This Book AFTER You Have Played Spades For Ten Years
Review: If you are just learning the game of spades you will be overwhelmed with the technical information designed for the advanced player. The vast majority of illustrated hands do not state a score. In the game of spades the score is very essential in both your bidding and play of the hand. Although I did find some parts of this book of value, I also found it much to wordy and boring. At times I felt as if I were reading a book about bridge.
