Review: This is not a book about jazz; rather, it's a collection of biographies of famous jazz players with brief historical accounts of each significant jazz era. Thus it's incredibly narrow-scoped and horrifically boring! What a miss. That's really all I can say. Buy a history book instead.

Readers with some musical knowledge who want to play as well as listen to jazz might turn from here to Jerry Coker's excellent IMPROVISING JAZZ and then to Jeff Burns's PENTATONIC SCALES FOR THE JAZZ-ROCK KEYBOARDIST.
