Summary: Brilliant transcriptions, more treasures for the piano
Review: Here is music which is otherwise difficult to find. Those interested in Godowsky and/or transcriptions will enthusiastically take this book in hand. The Bach transcriptions are fabulous (check out Carlo Grante's recording of all six Bach/Godowsky works on the Music and Arts label), in particular the great G minor fugue from the first violin partita (a great joy for a pianist to be able to play this fugue!) Among my other favorites are the transcriptions of the D minor cello suite (extremely rich in texture), the Schubert Moment Musical and song Morgengrüss (these last two having been brilliantly recorded by Stephen Hough on his "New Piano Album" for Hyperion). A good introductory essay by Dr. Millan Sachania provides insight into Godowsky's world and Godowsky's own remarks to his Bach and Schubert transcriptions is especially valuable. Hats off to Carl Fischer and Dr. Sachania for putting together this wonderful edition.
