Summary: Mis-interpretation of sex's role in music/anything
Review: The author imposes his own unhealthy view of sex's superiority over the rest of life's experiences. This book robs music's right to stand on its own two feet.It suggests that the music is valueless unless we attribute the greatness of it to sex.Even if it were true that a great composer (not all great composers presumed this) attributed his musical genius to his love of a woman...all that would mean is that he's not as talented in self-analysis and analysis of humanity, as he is with his music. In fact, many (again, not all) of the great composers were dreadfully inadequate at sexual relations and other social relationships. So, if you (as I do) believe that music is a value in itself, not in need of sex to give it life, you will learn zero from this book.I for one, do not need to be 'horny' to enjoy a piece of music, whether composing or just listening.Thats how I myself know beyond a shadow of a doubt that sex is not 'a must' for great art to be made or shared.Sex is neither above nor below music. It's just another branch on a tree (maybe a big fancy branch, but still just a branch).

Summary: No doubt the greatest book of 1998
Review: This is a simply a revolutionary book, and no doubt the greatest book written in 1998! Never in my live have I seen a book so ingeniously written by a man with such a sophisticated mind. Nigel Cawthorne is a true genius! This is the 19th time I read this book and simply enjoy reading it. I am currently a music professor with a doctorate degree and I have studied music for about 53 years now with over 60 compositions sold on CDs. I have done several research papers, but never have I talked about their sex lives. Now since I read this book I find having knowledge of the composers "private" and sex lives are far more important than learning about there music. People don't understand how important it is to learn about other peoples sex lives. One important thing Cawthorne didn't mention that disappointed me was about his own sex life. Yes to everyone it would sound strange if he mentioned about it. ...
