Rating: Summary: A Modern Guide to Piano Review: Easy to read, easy to understand, easy to put into practice. That's what Steve Goomas has accomplished in his new guide to theory and technique. Never again will you have to muddle through pedantic exercises or mind-numbing exposition. The book is broken down into two to three page sections by chord types and scales, i.e., major/minor, sevenths, 6/9, thirteenths, modes, augmented and so on. Frequently used scales are clearly set forth with short and easy examples as to how to apply them over a few chords progression-enough to where you get the gist of things and want to head right to the keyboard to try them out. In all the right places, Goomas interjects short, practical tips on how to improvise. You'll learn all the ways to voice a chord and then substitute other chords for it and then improvise over everything. Go out and buy this book and see for yourself.

Rating: Summary: Learn from one of the best. Review: In working on dozens of sessions with Steve over the past several years, he has proven himself a musician with deep roots. In this book he shares his secrets in a practical way. Steve isn't some showman with a few riffs up his sleeve; he is a true craftsman with 30 years of experience. Not many guys combine the chops of Bill Champlin with a masters degree in music -- and live to write a book about it. Enjoy.
Rating: Summary: Kudos to the Goom (Steve Goomas author of Keyboard Wisdom) Review: Steve has given us an exciting window on contemporary piano and keyboard playing. Concise and easy to read materials are presented directly so you can get your hands on a wide vocabulary of cool sounds right away enabling both
beginners and more advanced to excel and make that vocabulary their very own.
I know Steve to be a great player with a razor sharp mind and he has put his insights into this beautiful book that aims to lift hearts and minds into the worlds
of Jazz/ pop/ rock/latin and country. I have chosen to use "Keybaord Wisdom"
in my own classes at the university level. I highly recommend Steve's tome of wisdom. It's what you need to begin your practice for real.

Rating: Summary: A must for keyboardists! Review: This book by Steve Goomas is presented in a straight-ahead, logical, concise manner. I like books that are fun as well as educational and Steve's book really hits the mark for me with this effort. I also really liked the addition of the CD examples. His comments on pg. 10 "...Do in all 12 keys with both hands'" can't be emphasized enough! I'm glad that he hits the reader with that on the 2nd page of exercises. If you are an intermediate player with a need to expand your horizons - this is the book for you!

Rating: Summary: Goomas Book is really helpful--Barry Liesch Review: This is a great book for the intermediate (and especially) the advanced keyboardist. It will give you direction on how to practice improvisation intelligently and how to keep focused. Steve has conducted the Maranatha! Keyboard Worship Leader Workshops for many years. He has a Master's degree in composition, is a recording studio musician, and has had experience writing music for films, popular television programs, and commercials. An amazing amount of helpful information is crammed into this volume. The layout is clean and the examples and discussions are clear. I particularly like the four measure examples interspersed throughout that encapsulate various contemporary styles such as Salsa, Montuno, the Blues, Gospel, Swing, Boogie Woogie, Rock, Jazz, and so on. They are written so that they can be looped. If you learn these in all the keys, I think it will go a long ways toward giving you a feel for many contemporary styles. Goomas develops many improvisational concepts, illustrates a myriad of scales, chord combinations, and provides numerous, innovative examples for improvising, When illustrating the various chords he often provides a three or four chord progression, thus demonstrating how the material can fit into a context. This is valuable and helps one's understanding. Goomas also gets into the higher chord extensions such as the raised 9th and 11th for the advanced keyboardist. The book must contain 500 music examples. Here are some of his topics: triads, diatonic sevenths, voicing seventh chords, tritone substitution, major and minor scales, sixth chords, modes, ninth chords, voicing exercises for ninth chords, open voicing for ninth chords, eleventh chords, voicing eleventh chords, blues scales and fingerings, pentatonic scale and fingerings, thirteen chords, voicing thirteenth chords, ideas for jamming, diminished scale and fingerings, whole-tone scale and fingerings, chromatic scale and fingerings, exercises for upper structures, altered scales and fingerings. Get it I teach keyboard improv at the College level. I think this is one of the better keyboard books around these days.
