Rating: Summary: Pre-Hyacinth Review: These stories are sly! Most of the humor lies in what is not being told to you as a reader. Eliza is the name of the wife of the narrating character (you never know what his name is). He is pompous and arrogant, and the best part is how he gets his come-uppance, which you know he will.
This is a collection of short stories, and they are easily read. The hard part is putting the book down.
The narrating character reminds me of Hyacinth Bucket. The difference lies in the character of Eliza, who will sometimes acquiesce to the demands of her obnoxious husband, but more than likely will give him what for!
On a purely shallow level, these stories are terrific fun! On a deeper level, you understand a bit more about human nature and frailty, and the necessity of having a relatively sane person around to keep you on track.
I even enjoyed the preface by Terry Jones! (And I usually think prefaces are a waste of good paper!)
