Review: This is a wonderful collection of 11 essays on how to perform Debussy's works. It approaches the problem from both historical and modern analysis perspectives. Several essays focus on how Debussy and those who worked with him approached performance of his works. Others use modern analysis techniques to shed light on how to perform Debussy's most intricate works. Particularly pleasant for pianists like me are two essays: "Debussy and Early Debussystes at the Piano" by Cecilia Dunoyer which surveys what can be learned from historical recordings and writings; and "Timbre, Voice Leading, and the Musical Arabesque in Debussy's Piano Music" by Jann Passler who selects two example works and analyses their melodic structure (not a simple task in Debussy's music) to better understand their interpretation. All the essays are very targeted and informative about how Debussy's intentions. A must-have for those who really want to understand Debussy's music.
