Rating: Summary: A Healthy New Beginning Review: I recently bought this book from Amazon.com and I can't put it down. The things that Dr. Atkins say make absolute perfect sense. The diet is based on eating things that will not trigger fat storage and this helps you to burn stored fat. It does not focus soley on red meat - it focuses on protein rich natural foods. It is definitely worth checking out if you are having trouble losing weight - i have already lost 15 pounds.
Rating: Summary: Works great (at first) Review: I've been on Adkin's plan for about 3 months now. For the first 2 weeks of the diet, I lost about 10 pounds, and was initially pleased. However, I have only managed to lose another 5 pounds since the first 2 weeks! I think Adkins does bring up some valid points regarding the biochemistry of the diet, but overall I am not very pleased at the results of this plan. The writing style of Adkins gets a little old after awhile, as he's trying to persuade you that his plan is the best, and everyone else is wrong. One word of advice while you are out shopping for all your meat, eggs, and butter, buy a can of Metamucil, you are going to need it!
Rating: Summary: Time to Rethink Your Concept of the Word 'Diet' Review: When I first heard about the Atkins Diet last year, I shrugged it off as a fad. After all, how could I possibly lose weight by still consuming fats? I was brainwashed into believing that the only safe way to lose weight(and to keep it off) was low-fat, high carbohydrates. Boy, was I misinformed! The book itself is well written because Dr. Atkins takes the time to fully explain how and why the diet works, but at the same time, he doesn't lose the reader with excessive medical terminology. He does address all the misconceptions, doubts, and questions that I had about the diet and why it works. So, after reading the book, I started the diet and I can report that as of my 23rd day on the diet, I have lost 14 pounds and feel so much better. On top of that, it has been easier than I ever thought possible. No hunger pains, no desires to eat between meals, no mid-day drowsiness, no having to weigh food portions, etc. Some people will ask themselves whether they will ever be able to go back to the bread, pasta, cakes, candy, etc and my response is why go back to consuming sugar/carbohydrate/white flour if it made be feel bad in the first place. This diet is meant for a lifetime, not just a couple of weeks. The book was worth every penny that I paid for it.
Rating: Summary: Unbelievable, but great. Review: This diet is truly amazing. I wouldn't even call it a diet, because I have no desire to go back to eating the high-carbohydrate meals I used to eat. It is more of a lifestyle change. I have lost 70 pounds so far, and have started exercising because I feel so much better. I am hungry less freqently, have more energy and love the food I can eat. I have made (for example) low-carb pizza, cookies and pancakes using the recipes in the book. The book is easy to follow, and filled with a ton of information backing up what my body feels is true: a meat-and-vegetable-based diet is better for me than one loaded with empty carbohydrates. You do have to stick with it, and it can be hard if you love high-carb foods, but to lose weight, you have to be willing to give up a few things, completely at first, and almost completely after you reach your goal weight. I will watch my carb intake for the rest of my life, even after I finish losing the last 15 pounds I want to lose. I would also suggest checking out the Great Nutritional Debate at the usda.gov web site. It is a good way to sort of compare and contrast the different views of the advocates of several different diets. After reading the transcript of the debate, I still believe the Atkins Diet is best for my body. I highly recommend this book to anyone who couldn't lose weight even by cutting out fat and exercising a lot. I am 70 pounds lighter because of it. Thank you, Dr. Atkins!
Rating: Summary: Feel Faint? Must be losing weight! Review: I must say first that this diet does work if your only purpose in life is to lose weight. Personally, I always felt as though I was about to die....I find it amusing that Dr. Atkins says that you'll have more energy, because I didn't have any the entire time on the diet..... The really scary thing that I remember most though, is when I was crossing the street one time and was so weak, I didn't think I was going to be able to get to the other side....I did, and my body just shook and shook and shook.....It was truley one of the more scarier moments in all my life, and I have this man to thank for it...Healthy? Hardly...at least for my body type...I realized just last week that excersise does work....Oh, and mentally, I was a wreck as well....
Rating: Summary: It's best to get the facts then think about it, beforehand Review: I can understand buying this book thinking it may be the greatest thing in the world, but one should do the research and find out all of the facts first. This is a dangerous diet. I've heard it many different times throughout the news and specifically, I know on 20/20 there was a long segment solely critiquing the Dr. Atkins diet, there was especially a lot of news critiquing right after the re-release of his book. They all said yes, while it works, the diet is based mainly on red meats. Essentially, 20/20 relayed, it's like eating the same foods the cavemen ate. This means in short, while it's effective, it's highly dangerous and one is at high risk of a very shortened lifespand who would follow this diet. To one who isn't familiar, Dr. Atkins has been pushing his diet for years it isn't a new 'fad' at all. A transcript can be ordered from 20/20, and I am sure other stations have done extensive research as well that is available to the public through transcripts. Stick with the old method, if it's too good to be true---it probably is. If you are one who is needing to loose weight and will continue this diet even with the risks- why not TAE-BO instead? :-) I found that to be highly effective and fun, or of course whatever suits your taste exercise wise. That works for me and I also watch what I eat without dieting and I'm at an ideal weight.
Rating: Summary: A Quick Fix, But How Long Does It Last? Review: Tried this diet last year, lost 30 pounds, have since gained back 42. Oh yeah, you can get caught up in the hype, and this diet does work - initially. But just how long can you give up pasta, bread, doughnuts, flour, sugars, sodas, fruits, pancakes, french fries, crackers, and the list goes on and on and on. Like the other 7 friends I know who lost weight and have since regained more on this diet, I have gained my weight back also. This is impossible to follow long term. If you're like me and have tried every "quick fix" miracle diet out there and think "maybe this is the one", don't waste your money. Start examining why it is that you've tried every diet in the world and now you're heavier than ever. Plain and simple - diets don't work! Don't let this one tempt you either! Start eating less and exercising more - that's what I intend to do and I won't be shelling out megabucks on supplements and books to mega-millionaire Atkins doing it!
Rating: Summary: You Will Lose Weight, Just Like I Did! Review: I finally bought the book, after having learned about the diet on the internet. Atkins makes a large number of valid points about eating habits. I have lost 11 pounds so far (just need to lose 15 more). It was easy, I was never hungry, and I never had to exercise. There are almost 800 reviews on Amazon.com about this diet, most of them are positive! A small fraction of "nutirionists" will tell you the diet is bad. The whole concept is to cut back on sugar and flour. What is so bad about that? The remaining few negative posts will all be from people who obviously did not follow the diet properly, and give up after only one week. They will complain about being sluggish and weak during the first week. You **will** feel crappy the first week. Tt is because of all the sugar in your body. After that you will feel great. the only time I feel weak or suffer from headaches are the days after I cheat and eat something with carbs! Ask yourself, would you mind feeling weak for a few days if it meant you would lose 10, 20 or 50 pounds or more? YES! People also complain about how you get bad breath while on the diet. Obviously they did not read the book. The process of burning fat generates ketones in your body. The ketones (and hence the old fat) needs to be removed through your body. If you don't drink enough water, you will breathe it out, and your mouth will taste funny, and your breath will smell. The solution is to drink lots of water! Problem solved. People will also complain about constipation due to lack of fiber, since vegetables are limited on the diet. Well, guess what? Other foods (such as nuts) have fiber. Apparantly enough for a low carb diet. The reason why you need lots of fiber is because of the carbs! Take away the carbs, and you need less fiber. When I heard about this diet, I figured I would go on the Internet and find hundreds of people crying that they can't lose weight on it just like any other diet. I was shocked to find that almost everyone has had success. Just go to remarq.com and read the "Low Carb Diet - Support" group. You will be amazed at how many people are having astounding success. Some people have lost hundreds of pounds! Then go to the other newsgroups and you will find the opposite. Ever tried Slim Fast shakes? Look at the sugar content, and compare it to a can of Coke or Pepsi (not diet). You may as well just drink Coke! Those things are just filled with sugar. And those weight watchers foods and candy bars? They are also filled with sugar. Some people will claim that there may be a health risk associated with this diet. I thought to myself, over my 29 years there have been times when I ate a lot worse. I used to eat pizza 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And I didn't die. I figured there were people on this diet who obviously had been doing it for years, and have lost a lot of weight (one guy lost 150 pounds). If they survived, so will I. This diet is designed to cut out sugar and refined flour and other modern foods. Want proof that there are no long term health effects? Humans have been living on this planet for thousands of years without sugar and refined flour and they survived. So will you. Who is an expert in weight loss? Not doctors, not nutritionists, and not thin people. The experts are fat people who have succeeded at losing weight. And they say the diet works. Just read the next 780 messages and you'll see!
Rating: Summary: To try it is to love it... Review: I have to say that I am very thankful for this book. I have a nine month old and gained weight with my pregnancy, as lots of women do, and was having a hard time with the old non-fat starvation routine, especially since I breast-feed.(They really push 'eating right'. I don't think that being thirty pounds overweight is healthy or neccessary, though. My little boy has had no problems.) The weight was excruciatingly slow in coming off, but I had resigned myself to just wait it out. Then my father and mother tried the New Diet Revolution and had very good results. It took this convincing before I would try it, so terrified was I of "fattening" foods. I have lost 13lbs in five weeks, and am so completely excited about losing the rest, I just had to write this review. At the beginning, I also experienced some weakness, but after I started back on my pre-natal iron supplements, felt much better, and by the beginning of the third week felt very much normal, except that I was shrinking! The sugar was much harder to do without, probably due to the fact that I was so addicted to it- it is in EVERYTHING,it seems, especially "low fat" proccessed foods. I believe that that may be part of the reason for so many people having such ill effects at the onset. May I suggest that you ease into the diet a little bit, by just first cutting down on bread, rice, pasta and sugar. You will see the weight come off slowly, despite what you think will happen. I also feel that it is important to get a HIGH QUALITY vitamin complex, not just any old thing off the shelves. Get some recommendations from your doctor. I have tried Shaklee and was very impressed, but they are difficult to find. Vitamins have to actually be absorbed to do the body any good, and alot of the cheaper ones come right back out in the urine. As for the onslaught of opinions geared toward this food being "unhealthy", first of all, tell that to the homo-sapiens that lived on this planet millions of years before us. What do we believe cavemen ate, anyway? Frosted Flakes? Little Debbie Cakes after a long hard day of hunting? I used to think so, but Dr. Atkins reminded me of where we came from, and I am thankful for his voice, especially against the roar of the "Fat Free Industry" and refined sugar corporations. Secondly, you eat salad every single day, and today I had a tomato and onion and cheese omelet, and for lunch I had leftover chicken from last night, along with strawberries and whipped cream. Yumm! Unhealthy? I think not! I don't even think I'll be eating dinner, I feel so full. Maybe an unhealthy salad... Read the book, skip over the stuff about how great it is and get on with finding it out for yourself. It reads incredibly easy and he is quite thorough with his explanations on how this is working in your body. What an education! Thanks again Dr. Atkins. And mom and dad for trying it first!
Rating: Summary: insulin can destroy you Review: The revolution by atkins for this reader is the nonreactive highs and lows I have been used to my entire life. I get the feeling now that my head is steady and cool all day and into the night. I don't feel like falling asleep on my way to work after eating the bagel with cream cheese in the morning. the same goes for the after lunch blues I was used to, after a typical charbo lunch. and for the drive home in the evening, hungry for the next cgarbo load, no more! Well I happen to love omlettes, steak, fish , chops etc. I can vacation, travel on business again, withoutr the seatbelt extender from the airline. In only eight week I dropped 22 pounds. the best part of it is, I can see a lifestyle on this plan for my future. whats the big deal? On the maintainance plan you get to have carbs in small doses, but by then I have taught myself the diference in which carbs are garbage and the right choices to make. Bottom line is, I like the book, It speaks to the reader, one can identify with the Dr. Atkins has a vulnerable, open sensability and writing style. This is a reference book, I don't need a diet to follow strictly laid out each meal. I like the variety of choices I can make. the diet revolution puts matters in your own hands!
