Summary: I'm a believer now!
Review: I bought the book last June(97), read it, followed the guidelines EXACTLY to the letter. To my surprise, I lost 6 pounds the first week, and another 2 the following week. I particularly loved the "reward meals." I was well on my way. But unfortunately, what I didn't do is watch out for the "diet pitfalls" that usually come in our path and cause us to eventually stray away from our diet goals. This is what happened to me, after my second week on the program, I quit. I strongly believe I would have lost all the weight had I stayed on the program. Well, it's a year later, and I'm still 60 pounds overweight because I decided I'll try to do it my way instead. The explanation of a "carbohydrate addict" described me to a tee. Even though I knew this a year ago, I thought I could lose weight by eating normally BUT IN MODERATION coupled with exercise. I know now that there is no such thing as "moderation" when you're a carbohydrate addict. Drs. Heller know what they are talking about when they say that very high carbohydrate diets cause a chemical imbalance. This imbalance is the production of too much insulin that causes us to overeat. This is why you feel out of control at times.

I'm making a new commitment to lose the 60 pounds by again following the easy guidelines in their book. This time, however, I will WATCH for the pitfalls which will ensure my success. If you are planning to buy this book, I highly recommend it.

Summary: Positive read-makes you feel you can conquer weight problem
Review: Although it's no mystery story, this book hooks you from the beginning. Reading Rachels story as an overweight child, you are immediately immersed. Whether you were the cruel one who teased, or the object of that teasing, you cannot help but relate to this story. After you read this, you want to, HAVE to keep going! The basic diet is easy to understand and positive. It makes you feel as though you can conquer your weight problem once and for all. There is the scientific jargon that is necessary to convince you that this is based on science and not fantasy, but not so much that you doze-off trying to comprehend it. With individual testimonials ("Stories" as they are called in the book) sprinkled in, you get a real-life feel for pitfalls you yourself may encounter. Why not try this, what have you got to lose (besides excess FAT)!

Summary: IT WORKED -- ONCE
Review: I could not lose that last 12 pounds for anything, and I am an avid fan of exercise -- running, aerobics, weights, you name it. Then someone told me to try this book and I lost it all, and easily! It was wonderful to get into clothes I couldn't wear for two years, and to look fabulous on my wedding day. But I've gained back six pounds that I cannot for the life of me lose, even though I try every day for almost a year now. Can someone please tell me what happened, and why I could do it the first time, but not now? HELP!

Summary: This book is a great way to loose weight.
Review: I have tried MANY different diets, and nothing has seemed to help. But this concept in dieting has worked, I started this diet three (3) weeks ago, and I've lost 6 pounds.

Summary: Awesome, I've finally found my way to permanent weight loss.
Review: I am a 32 year old mother of 3, and I can tell you the third baby really did its damage. She is 2 years old now, and up until this book, I haven't been able to lose the weight (I weighed almost 200 lbs) due to not having the will power to deprive myself of all the "treats". Now with this book, I've been able to control my eating habits and I've lost about 20 lbs so far in a 5 week period. Its awesome, everybody is starting to notice the new me that is emerging, and I'm so much happier, I just wish I could get in contact with these people so I could thank them. If you are thinking about buying this book, I have one thing to say....DO IT!!! You won't regret it.

Summary: The non-deprivation way to lasting weight loss--it works!
Review: Drs. Rachael and Richard Heller are pioneers in the field of weight loss techniques for those who have failed on everything else. This book convincingly explains the connection between excess insulin production and over-consumption of carbohydrates, and how this contributes to food cravings and obesity. Their healthful eating program allows the carbohydrate-addicted person to control their hunger and eating and to lose weight safely. The program even allows for one completely unrestricted meal for one hour each day, allowing the "dieter" the freedom to eat their most pleasurable foods without guilt or deprivation. Drs. Heller and Heller point out that individuals who are not true "carbohydrate addicts" will probably not be able to use the program for weight loss, but for true addicts the success rate is at least 85%. A simple test contained in the book allows the reader to determine if they meet the criteria for a carbohydrate addict. For those for whom this program works, it is a God-send and a miracle. Anyone who feels they can't control their cravings for carbohydrates or thinks they can't lose weight owes it to him/herself to check out this book. The program really works!

Summary: A good eating program for those sensitive to carbs
Review: Carbs aren't the enemy, it's just the TYPE of carbs you eat that can shoot your glycemic index way up, causing a huge insulin rush. Once your body becomes used to those high amounts of insulin, the "excess" gets stored just like excess calories do- in the form of fat. Dr.'s Heller help us to understand that there are good carb choices and bad carb choices. For example, most fruits and vegetables are good carbs, while bread, rice, corn, bananas, table and other forms of sugar, sweets, etc are all bad forms of carbs. Carb Addicts is simply about making good choices. The "reward meal" allows you one meal a day where you can eat some bad carbs, provided you eat a small side salad first, and eat equal portions of protein and good carbs along with the bad. You can go back for more "bad" carbs as long as you also take more and equal amounts of protein and good carbs. Eventually, you insulins levels even out, and you lose the cravings for the "bad" carbs. The book gives you the list of foods to eat and foods to avoid, plus a few recipes to help you create low-carb meals. Also included is a test to find out how sensitive you are to carbs.

Summary: This diet made me sick!
Review: After two weeks on this diet plan I could bearly lift my head up. I nearly fell asleep driving home from work nights...not to mention hardly staying awake while at work. I thought it would be a pleasant change from the restrictions of Atkins, but I was never tired on Atkins. I don't know if it had something to do with insulin from the sudden onslaught of carbs...or what the problem was. All I know is I am happily following Atkins and losing much more rapidly than I did on this CAD plan. In two weeks I lost 6 lbs. on CAD...14 on Atkins. You figure it out.

Summary: Take the Carb Addict's Test Before Starting
Review: It's been 4 days on the diet, and I've loss 5.5 pounds already! It's important that you take the carb addict's test, located at the beginning of the book, before starting the diet. Be sure to answer the questions honestly. You may find out that you are not a carb addict. If your not, this diet won't work for you. For those who say that they are starving between meals, you should slightly increase the fat content of your complimentary meals, say with a piece of cheese, small piece of butter, etc. This will give you that full filling that will last you to the next meal. What has allowed me to beat those cravings it knowing that I can eat anything I want for my Reward Meal.

Excellent Book!
