Rating: Summary: You'll never think about fat the same way again. Review: I picked up this book off the new book rack at the library because it looked interesting and it changed the way I think about fat forever. This book debunks conventional views about being overweight, dieting, and related health concerns by taking an objective look at the raw data from existing medical studies. Everyone -- thin, fat, and in between -- should read this book.
I've always been thin without radically dieting. I've always assumed that I was therefore healthier than fat people. I also truly believed that fat people must eat too much of the wrong food and not exercise enough or they would not be fat. I was pretty smug about it all. I will never think that way again. This book has rid me of an insidious prejudice.
I'm a lawyer and thus trained to be skeptical. This book is well-reasoned and its conclusions follow from the evidence. I am sending this book to friends and relatives who have battled "weight problems" all their lives and I hope it will be as life changing for them as it was for me.
Rating: Summary: Overweigth vs Obese Review: More and more self-indulgence. Blame it on everybody else but people themselves. C'mon, stop the insanity. The issue here is not a person that is 20 pounds overweight. It is more like 100+ pounds overweigth!
Only when people accept that they can control their mouth and impulses, then they will start living healthier lives.Well, the truth of the matter is, weight=calories+no excercise.
And don't blame it on the genes either. You want to be fat, that is fine. Nowhere else in the world one finds as many morbidly obese people as in the US. Go overseas and you will see!
Rating: Summary: An intriguing counter-argument to modern thinking Review: Chronic adult and juvenile obesity is a major health crisis according to both government studies and weight loss industry officials -- or is it? Paul Campos leads a backlash against 'weight hysteria' and its dangerous consequences with The Obesity Myth, showing how the public is constantly misinformed about the medical significance of weight, and why dieting is actually bad for health. An intriguing counter-argument to modern thinking evolves.
Rating: Summary: This Book Could Change Your Life Review: This book presents a different perspective on the issue of obesity in America. Our culture has twisted the image of what constitutes a healthy weight into a standard that would be considered anorexic from just about any historical viewpoint. The scientific evidence that obesity is a health risk is largely without merit. Mr. Campos exposes the flawed methodology of the flagship studies on obesity that tout the concept of health that begins at a Body Mass Index below 25. If you've agonized over losing twenty or thirty pounds and if you've fallen for the low carb, low fat, low calorie hype, you may find comfort and perhaps the ability to accept yourself after reading this book.
Rating: Summary: Worth reading for another viewpoint Review: This book may or may not be correct regarding health problems associated with obesity, but it is certainly right on target regarding the anorexic standards our society now holds, especially for women. A few times in my life I have dropped from a size 8-10 to a size 4-6, and every time I have been told by NUMEROUS people that they had been concerned about me being "overweight" before dropping the pounds. At a size 8!! It is this kind of insanity that needs to be examined.
I also love that this book was written by a man, as it gives me hope that not all men have bought into the Courtney Cox look.
