Rating: Summary: A Gem of a Book Review: A READER FROM NEW MEXICO WRITES:Recently, for my mother's seniors' bookclub, I reviewed Suza Francina's book "The New Yoga for People Over 50". The experience was grand for several reasons. First, Francina's book taught me how to make yoga accessible for seniors; and through that I quickly came to realize that I no longer had any fear of teaching yoga to an older crowd. In fact, the bookclub was inspired because there were pictures of "real people" doing things that seemed possible. My book review lasted fifteen minutes and the membership stayed another 45 minutes asking questions. This is the second and best reason the experience was grand. The club is interested in a follow up session. In the meantime several members have started classes. This book is important. It can help you get seniors moving in ways they never dreamed possible. It inspires me to approach seniors and teach them that yoga is a healthy path which enhances the quality of their lives. Thank you Suza Francina for a wonderful teaching tool!

Rating: Summary: Wonderfully inspiring yoga books Review: I love the work that Suza Francina is doing with older adults. I currently teach yoga in a wellness center for seniors under the auspices of Cal State University, Sacramento and also for The Yoga Solution, Sacramento. I promote Suza's "The New Yoga for People Over 50" and "Yoga and the Wisdom of Menopause" to my students and other teachers. There are hundreds of yoga books being published, but what sets Suza's books apart from all of them, are the personal testimonies of how yoga helped to change their lives. When I need inspiration or when I need to inspire some of my students, it is always a pleasure to share the stories and pictures from Suza's books. In a nutshell, Suza has found a way to put a "face" (and a smiling one at that) on yoga for older adults. Her books are more than "how to do manuals" on yoga--they explain "why we should" do yoga which is why I love to share them. I consider them yoga book gems!!! Janice Freeman, Sacramento, Calif
Rating: Summary: Great encouraging sensitive book for any age person Review: I love this book. It is one of a kind. The other books on yoga show young people in impossible poses and don't show the gradual process of getting there or the intermediate poses that will get you there eventually. I am only 41 years old, but find this book extremely helpful and encouraging. I love seeing the pictures of older people looking so healthy and vibrant. It gives me hope for the future and shows you that getting older only means getting wiser, more flexible and healthier. Thank you Suza!
Rating: Summary: Yoga and The Wisdom of Menopause Review: I read suza Francina's book "Yoga and the Wisdom of Menopause" because I am a yoga student and a menopausal women. I am also a nurse working in women's healthcare. I was pleasantly suprised to find that this book helped me on a personal level as well as a professional level. The book is a wealth of information that can answer many questions regarding menopause and what our bodies might endure. The book explains how yoga can support one's health during the menopause transition. She discusses such topics such as hormonal balance, fatique, hot flashes, pelvic health, osteoporosis, cancer and heart disease. The book shows how yoga can help women with any of these health concerns. The yoga poses suggested to relieve the side effects of menopause are clearly described and illustrated with photographs. This book is very inspiring and I highly recommend it to my associates, clients and friends.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: I think the "The New Yoga for People Over 50" is one of the best yoga books I have ever read for the older generation. I am a yoga instructor and most of my students are 40,50,60,70. I have read the book three times, and am reading it again. I get something out of it each time to apply to teaching and my own practice. It gives hope to more mature people that they do not have to be inflexible. It shows you can start yoga at any age, and still get its benefits.
Rating: Summary: Life enriching guidance Review: The New Yoga for People Over 50 is enriching and a lifelong guide to promote vitality as we approach our vintage years. Suza Francina's energy, zest and love of life shine through. She shares her years of knowledge, spiritual balance and years of yoga training with us as a gift. We benefit from her wisdom, sharing, stories and photos. She has real people looking young and vibrant and tells us how we can do the same. I bought this book for all my friends as a holiday gift. I've learned a great deal from Francina's book and want to share my knowledge with all those whom I love and want to live to a ripe rich age and do so with gusto, great flexibility and health. Bless you Suza for leaving a precious legacy for all of us. More than one life has breathed easier due to your great book. Christina E. Bublick... a real yoga and Suza Francina fan!!
Rating: Summary: Inspiring Review: The pictures in the book are very inspiring. It is what we all hope we look like when doing yoga over 50. This is a good companion book to another basic yoga book. This one gives special consideration to ailments and difficulties that are specific to the older generation. I lent my first copy and never got it back so I had to replace it. Its not a yoga book I can do without.
Rating: Summary: Excellent reference book; buy an extra to share with friends Review: This book has made a difference in my life! I have read several yoga books, but "The New Yoga for People Over 50" by Suza Francina spoke to my special needs. If you are seeking answers for questions relating to menopause, osteoporosis, healthy heart, etc., seek no more. This book provides answers. Her chapter on feet and knees is extremely helpful, providing the groundwork for specific needs. I keep this book handy as an excellent reference manual, both for myself and my friends. Additionally, this book is an inspiration to learn and practice yoga. The models are real and most are definitely over 50 years old. This in itself is an incentive. When you see people in their 70's and 80's, you are encouraged that you, too, can do yoga well into your "golden" years. After reading her book, I was excited to learn that I am close enough to Ojai (an hour's drive but well worth it) to take classes by Suza. She is an empowering teacher as well as a talented author. If you cannot attend a class, "The New Yoga for People Over 50" will more than suffice. Buy more than one; you'll want to share with a friend. Enjoy!
