Summary: Excellent Intro To NLP
Review: Anne Linden's Mindworks is a bit different than most NLP books I've read so far. For one thing, the book is highly organized, and reads as much like an encyclopedia as anything else. You won't find the author hop-scotching from one subject to the next or throwing things at you out of context. The book is well laid out, and is truly aimed at those with little to no previous knowledge of NLP. It helps you learn the basics from the ground up.

My only real complaint about the book is that so much is devoted to theory, and so little is devoted to practical implementation of NLP. You'll find far fewer "exercises" in this book than you will in other NLP volumes.

All in all, this book is a great place to start learning about NLP, and is an excellent reference on basic NLP concepts. If you want to put NLP to work for you in a practical manner though, you'll need to look elsewhere.

Summary: Excellent Overview
Review: For a book which claims to offer new insight into how the mind works most of the stuff in this book is mind-numbingly obvious. Examples: Be flexible in thinking, use specifics when talking to someone, don't asume other people know what you are talking about, make sure you explain as much as you can. I suppose this book is useful to some but to me I found it kinda obvious. It reminded me a little of Scientology with some of the mind techniques for dealing with emotions. In the end its not really something I'd recommend unless you were really into NLP in the first place.

Summary: Big on ambition, poor on delivery
Review: Given such a low cover price you might think this was a pretty cheap book - until you discover how poor quality it is, information and accuracy-wise.

For example, this is supposed to be an introduction to NLP, yet it makes no mention whatever of a key feature of NLP - the meta programs (mental filters). And whilst the authors do at least mention the meta model - another key concept in NLP - it gets far too little coverage (just 28 pages in a book 354 pages long).

On the subject of accuracy, the authors invent presuppositions that are not merely unknown in mainstream NLP but actual contrary to NLP thinking, such as:

Genuine NLP presupposition - "There is no such thing as failure, only feedback" (using the cybernetics definition of "feedback")

Mindworks pseudo-NLP presupposition - "You can turn failure into feedback"

How do you turn something INTO feedback if it already IS feedback?

The authors appear to be equally at a loss when it comes to simple matters of fact. For example, they baldly state that:

' "The map is not the territory" is an NLP presupposition that's taken from Noam Chomsky'

Oh really? So why does everyone else (correctly) attribute the epigram to Alfred Korzybski, creator of General Semantics?

To cut to the chase, this book is too long-winded, too inaccurate, and too poorly written to be worth even the original cover price.
Definitely NOT recommended.

Summary: NLP basics but not too deep
Review: I am currently reading this book for the second time and enjoy reading it just as much as the first time. As a new student of NLP, i have found this book very informative and very helpful. To be exact it has increased my thirst for NLP knowledge and the power of the mind. The one thing that really impresses me with this book is its section on goals and goalsetting. A very good book and one of my favorites.

Summary: Well Organized, Good Overview of NLP
Review: I've read various NLP books, and if I had to recommend only one book to purchase on the topic it would be this one. It gives a good, broad overview of the subject matter, and breaks the information into easy to apply sections. It also works well as a handbook, and reference book, compared to the other NLP books that I've read. It is thorough.

Each chapter is only a few pages long, for the most part. There are exercises to do at the end of the chapters; and if you hope to get any benefit from the principles of NLP, it is important to apply what you read - both doing the exercises and implimenting your personal goal plans ("objectives").

This book makes it easy to understand and impliment the principles of NLP.

Summary: Great practical introduction
Review: NLP can get pretty complicated with its extensive jargon and theories. Mindworks, by keeping in mind who its audience is, presents NLP in a easy-to-follow, personal style with loads of NLP techniques one can use immediately. The organization of the material is EXCELLENT; I really wish more NLP books would follow this sort of plan. Moreover, Anne Linden deftly uses real-world examples and short stories. Really, it's the clearest, most practical explanation I've ever read.

I recommend this one with NLP Comprehensive's "NLP: The Technology of Achievement." The only thing lacking with Mindworks is an extensive set of useful, thorough exercises which the latter book does offer. Read Mindworks for the theory, and "NLP: The Technology of Achievement" to practice it.

Summary: Excellent book
Review: This as an excellent intro and overview into the field of NLP. Linden has done a great job with this book, though it is a bit slow to get into, the wealth of information that it contains, is well worth the persaverance. It is a shame that it is out of print.

If you are looking for a good book to introduce you to NLP, I suggest this book (if you can find it), and O'Connor's Intro to NLP. Both are excellent choices, that together give a thorough overview.

Summary: Well Organized, Good Overview of NLP
Review: This is a well written and easy to read introduction to NLP. It avoids confusing jargon and sticks to major concepts. For those new to NLP, this is an excellent place to start.

Summary: Realistic Self Improvement
Review: This text explores various facets of NLP and how it can be used to change your life. The author is the director of an NLP training center in New York City, but the writing style and presentation of the material is done in an easy to understand and conversational style. The book is also packed with examples to demonstrate the concepts, which helps tremendously in understanding how they are supposed to work. At the end of each section are practical exercises that help you apply the techniques covered in that chapter.

I really liked the way that the book is laid out in short chapters that could be read in just a few minutes. It made it easy to pick it up when I had a few minutes, read a chapter, read the exercises and apply that technique. I also enjoyed the chapter about changing behavior and working with problems that you have tried unsuccessfully to rid yourself of before. Some of the first sections seemed to spend a lot of time on basic communication techniques, which is a very important part of NLP, but it seemed repetitive to the point of being almost boring. If you find the first sections fascinating then that is great, if you find them common sense and a bit more boring then hang in there as it does get better and provide a lot of useful information before the book is completed. A good book with a lot of basic useful techniques that you can apply yourself, it is a wonderful reference that should be read several times a year to remind you that there are other techniques that you may not have tried which might help you unlock the promise of who you can be.
