Summary: A GOOD BEGINNER'S BOOK
Review: As one who has used herbs for over thirty years, I am a strong believer in their power to heal providing one first learns which herbs to use, how much, and how herbs can interact with each other. Just as the medications your doctor prescribes, herbs in the wrong combination can react with each other causing some unpleasant and sometimes dangerous side effects. However, for one who is inexperienced in this area, this book is an excellent starting point to at least become acquainted with herbs in general and their use. The one downside I did find with the book is that it was far too short and incomplete. Herbs are often referred to under different names, but there are many herbs that I could not find listed here under any name. This book is a great starting point; however, anyone not experienced with herbs and their uses may want to check with their health care provider before attempting to "prescribe their own alternative medicine." Herbs have a valid use but only if the correct herb, or combinaion of herbs, is used and the doseage is right for you.

Summary: an informative, beautifully illustrated guide
Review: I found "Herbs for the Soul" to be a very helpful guide to understanding different herbs and the healing powers they possess. The author has organized her book clearly into separate categories (relaxation, stimulation, etc.). This allowed me to compare different herbs that contain related potencies, and discover which ones might work well together. The descriptions also explain how the herbs work on the body and warns of possible interactions. She takes care to inform the reader about the history of an herb in its use in Western or Chinese treatments, and of herbal science in general. Last but not least, the book is illustrated with artistic photographs of herbs and herbal preparations. All in all this is an excellent book for understanding herbs for both the novice and the more experienced health seeker.
