Description:

How to Have Magnificent Sex is designed to put the tiger back in the tank for the 43 percent of women and 31 percent of men who have sexual problems. Lana Holstein, a Yale-educated physician who is medical director of women's health at Canyon Ranch Health Resort, believes a healthy sex life is a "birthright" and presents a plan for eroticizing encounters gone bland. Using anecdotes from her 25-year medical practice (patients are referred to by first name only, of course), Holstein illustrates seven principles that she says make or break sexual euphoria, theorizing that all must work in harmony for the most tantalizing results.

Lest you think "ecstatic sex" comes naturally, Holstein likens erotic encounters to tennis, suggesting that practice, and lots of it, makes perfect. By experimenting with all seven dimensions--understanding the body, exploring the senses, recharging desire, opening the heart, boosting intimacy, baring the soul, and embracing the spirit--Holstein says couples can achieve a more perfect union, and she coaxes lovers along with techniques to try at the end of each chapter (for example, to heighten your sensual dimension, go dancing and try other means of nonsexual contact; to become more soulful, create a love room filled with candles, incense, music, and colors). And for more advanced students, there's even a section on tantra, the path to enlightenment via sexual practice made famous by popular singer Sting.

Entertaining as the book is to read (one of Holstein's workshop attendees exclaims, "I'll never be too tired again!"), the real fun for the reader starts, of course, when you shut the cover and head under the covers. --Deborah Geigis Berry
