Summary: A Dark Horse for the Pulitzer in Biography?
Review: This book was easily the best biography of Jesse James I have ever read. I gave me a real sense of life in Missouri during James's lifetime and the role he played in regional politics. It has been praised by major historians including James M. McPherson, America's leading authority on the Civil War, and Eric Foner, America's leading authority on Reconstruction. It was the subject of a cover review (positive) in THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW. It wouldn't surprise me if this book was nominated for a Pulitzer in Biography.

Summary: candidate for Pulitzer
Review: This magnificently researched biography is a treasure of information for all Cival War buffs, every historian, and all readers of American history. It finally presents an accurate picture of the real Jesse James. This book deserves a Pulitzer prize. Congratulations on a great book. T. Patton, Minnesota

Summary: Jesse James: Last Rebel of the Civil War
Review: This was an interesting and new look at one of our Civil War "heros" as opposed to the Hollywood version. I would recommend this to any history buff.

Summary: Good read
Review: Well, there have been some very thorough reviews so I don't feel there is much to add except to say that this is very good and interesting read. I must admit that I do not know much about Jesse James or his life beyond what you see on TV, but Stiles does an excellent job of building evidence for his conclusions. The book was very convincing and, beyond that, was a good read, well researched, and well written. This is a good book whether you are just starting out learning about James or have read other works about him. Further, it is a very good look at Civil War Missouri.
