Rating: Summary: the forgotten holocaust Review: It is a great book about what happened in Nanking in December 1937. The author presents facts without any exageration. It is very sad that the Nanking Massacre has been largely forgotten in the west. I keep asking myself why? Is that because the victims of the Massacre were Chinese instead of the westerners? The number of 300,000 victims was calculated by International Military Court (Far East) not by the Comunist Chinese as some of the readers might believe like the reader from Arlington. At that time, it was the Natioinalist Kuomingtang that governed China. Again the reader from Arlington said "There were independant international journalists present during that time. Why didnt any of them report this alleged atrocity?" I referred other readers who want to find out the truth to read an eyewitness report "All Captives Slain" from then New York Times reporter, F. Tillman. This article could be found in Modern History Soursebook. Even the Germans helped the Nanking citizens at that time. A German business man and Nazi party member, John Rabe, rescued thousands of Chinese from the atrocity of the Japanese army. Detailed information could be found in Rabe Diary. As a freelance interpreter, I went to Nanking with Finnish Broadcasting Company in 1998 to interview two survivors of the Nanking Massacre, between them was the woman whose story was recounted in Iris's book. Though at that time, almost 60 years passed, I could still clearly see the scars left on Madame Li's face by the bayonet used by the Japanese soldiers. It is time to put aside racism and face the truth. Holocaust shouldn't be recognized only in connection with who the victim is. Victims of all color have the equal right to be recognized. No life of a certain group of people is more important than that of another group.
Rating: Summary: freedom of speech or slander? Review: If this book was written based on the "accounts of survivors" than that would explain the lies presented in this book. Since when does a communist tell the truth? This book is riddled with lies (and doctored photos) or at best, gross inaccuracies. If there is even one lie, why should we believe any of it? There were independant international journalists present during that time. Why didnt any of them report this alleged atrocity? Imperial Japan had only one division in Nanjing - 5000 soldiers armed with swords and lousy bolt-action rifles. If they really wanted to kill alot of Chinese, why didnt they take their machine guns there? Most of the residents of Nanking (population est. at 150,000) fled the city before the Japs arrived. To say few thousand Chinese were killed in Nanking is believable. Freedom of speech is a right in America, but not slander.
Rating: Summary: This is written based on the fablicated crime. Review: . What called "Nanking Massacre" was fabricated in the International Military Tribune for the Far East. Chang's claim of 300,000 murder is based on the Chinese Community Party's statement on the population in Nanking as follows; Dec1937 - Jan1938 - Mar1938 500,000 - 250,000 - 170,000 while the record by the International Committee of the Nanking Safty Zone says; Dec1937 - Jan1938 - Mar1938 200,000 - 250,000 - 270,000 I highly recommend to examine the different views on this problem by yourself, reading "what really happened in nanking" or "the alleged 'Nanking Massacre'". .
Rating: Summary: Forgotten holocaust Review: Ignore the controversy...rebuke the critics...forget what you have heard...read this book. Any American student knows about The Holocaust...that terrible time during the 30's and 40's were over six million Jews were tortured, raped, and eventually, slaughtered. However, this holocaust has a sister. In the 30's, during the Sino-Japanese War, the civilians of Nanking were terrorized, tortured, raped, and killed. Ask any American student...they probably won't be able to tell you where Nanking is, let alone what happened there. I suppose there is a triplet as well. The third holocaust takes place in the present...it is historical genocide. The world has forgotten these atrocities, and the graves of Nanking's victoms are beging spat upon daily. I beg you...the victoms beg you, to read this book. It may be exaggerated (key word is "may"), Iris Chan may not be the greatest writer of all time...but you will never see the world in the same way after you know these secrets. Don't allow this auora of ignorance to seep into our future generation...
Rating: Summary: Why are the japanese the ones who are offended of this? Review: i think this is a wonderful book. who cares about the pictures? i believe that she made her point accross, and i've been thinking exactly what she has even before i've read this book. she is a terrific writer and THE REASON SHE WROTE TO BOOK is because everyone talks about how horrible the holocaust was. yes it was devastating, but the chinese did their share of suffering as well! maybe even worse, yes that was the japanese in the PAST we know not every japanese is that way. we are not accusing or trying to say that japanese people are only barbaric and nothing more. iris wants everyone to remember this CRUEL history, to prevent it from every happening to ANY COUNTRY again. today is a different day, that was history... but it's good just to be know more about it for a better making in the future.
Rating: Summary: Are you fair? Review: -- If you think you are always fair or hoping to be fair, I recommend you to read "The Alleged Nanking Massacre" or "What really happened in Nanking" so that you can judge which is the truth. It is said that there are 170 historically incorrect descriptions and photographs are modified or forged in this book. Really important thing is not what she is trying to describe in this book, but why she wrote this book.
Rating: Summary: The Rape of Nanking Review: The book, The rape of Nanking by, Iris Chang is mind boggling, but keeps your attention from start to finish. It is definitly one of my favorite books. The way Iris Chang writes about the events in Nanking is so intreging because she writes the story from every different point of view. I highly recommend this book. It is repulsive but interesting.
Rating: Summary: great and extensive evaluation of the hidden WWII horrors Review: The book is great, it takes the story from three perspectives and in a very historically correct and concise recreation of a forgotten story. I was brought to tears many times while reading this book, a must read. Strongly recommended. A+
Rating: Summary: Another forgotten holocaust Review: The slaughter of Nanking, like those of Cambodia, Ukraine, and the Congo, is just another example of non-European genocides that are conveniently overlooked. "The Rape of Nanking" is a descriptive detail, taken from the accounts of survivors, documenting the systematic murder, torture, and rape carried out by the Japanese Imperial Army in the 1930's. What's sad is that this book could've been written today about Rwanda, Chechnya, Sudan, or a number of other places of which foreign intervention to prevent such atrocities cannot take place without the "legitimacy" of the UN. Oh, except if it takes place in Europe. Then suddenly the UN can be sidestepped and NATO approval is sufficient. "The Rape of Nanking" is just one small sliver of the horrors unleashed by the Japanese Army across Asia and the south Pacific. Due to post-war politics and the rise of Communist China, these war crimes were overlooked and unpunished. This book will depress you considerably, but it is a book that needs to be written to educate people to what happened.
Rating: Summary: A volume of terrifying power Review: This is arguably the most powerful piece of nonfiction that I have ever read, period. It documents some of the worst atrocities to have ever been inflicted upon human lives since the Dark Ages. Truly, the Massacre of Nanjing was and forever shall be the "Forgotten Holocaust", and it is so only because the cowardly Japanese, even now, refuse to admit to such terrible warcrimes. Even the Nazis, unlike these inhuman barbarians, had the courage to admit wrong and submit to justice. Japan is a country without honor, and they shall be shamed for all eternity.
