Rating: Summary: Great Tale of the Night, Day, and After of D-Day Review: I thought this book was a great book. It put the events that happened at Normandy into great detail. Cornelius Ryan did a great job of telling the story by the way the soldiers felt at the battle front. I plan to read many more books about Normandy, and some more books by Cornelius Ryan.
Rating: Summary: BOOK DOES NOT SHOWCASE AUTHORS TRUE ABILITY'S. Review: First let me tell you this...i enjoyed this book...i loved this book, but it is not a masterpiece and fails in comparison to ryan's other masterpiece ( his real masterpiece) A BRIDGE TOO FAR. This book is a good acount of what happened, but in no way incompass's the human side of it. In a bridge too far he makes you feel that you are acutally in arnhem, that you are part of the assault across the whall, that you are a dutch civilian, yet here he simply states eyewitness acounts and so on and so forth. In ABTF an emotional core is made and you connect with the poeple and have some since of the casualty's and horror. In the longest day he try's to glorify the day, as if it was something that was great. It is a well written piece, but fails in comparison to his other works and to more in depth books on D-DAY(stephen ambrose perhaps?).
Rating: Summary: This book is as good as the film "Saving Private Ryan" Review: This is one of 3 WWII books my A.P. European History Class reads and my students love it. They really get into the night drops and all the confusion that took place. I never fully realized just how close a battle D-Day was. There were so many . . . if's!
Rating: Summary: A classic on World War II Review: This is one of my favorite history books, because it it is a riveting account that honors the men who sacrificed so much for freedom. As a 14 year old living in Tripoli, Libya, I was awe-struck by the movie "The Longest Day." The Allied soldiers in that dramatic account became my heroes (and they are to this day 32 years later). The book, which the movie was based upon, is every bit as dramatic as the movie.
Rating: Summary: Classic story of the most momentous day in the 20th century. Review: This is a great D-Day story. Were it not for "D-Day" by Stephen Ambrose, this would be THE D-Day book. Nonetheless it is an extremely good book. It's informative yet very easy to read. It's historical but has a personal feel to it. Read "D-Day" by Stephen Ambrose. You'll love both books.
Rating: Summary: Intense and Personal Review: One of the greatest books on military history ever written, and certainly the best on D-Day. It harkens back to the days of a personal and international heroism that is lacking in the modern age. Ryan does and excellent job of weaving individuals into the story, while spanning one of the largest military operations of all time. It is very reminiscent of Shaara's "The Killer Angels," which also focuses on the thoughts and goals of famous historical characters. An absolutely superb book, with hints of Sledge's "With the Old Breed" and Ryan's own "A Bridge Too Far."
Rating: Summary: It is an excellent book for college students. Review: We are suggesting the book for all students to read because it gives such an excellent view of that part of history.
Rating: Summary: One of the classics Review: This book began my long interest in military history. Mr Ryan brought the events of the day together in a way that was intense and intimate. I strongly recomend this book to be read by any young reader who wants to understand the heroism of a past age.
Rating: Summary: Excellent, Informative and Atmospheric Review: Probably the best book I have read about the D-Day landings. Use of first hand accounts from both the Allied and German sides makes this an excellent read from cover to cover. It is easy to believe you are actually involved in the fighting, from the paratroop landings, through the beach landings and the the slaughter on Omaha to the final success of the seabourne landings. The book is also interspersed with the lighter side of these historic events.Read this book - you will not be able to put it down!
Rating: Summary: Much more informative and detailed than the movie! Review: For those of you who have seen the movie by the same title, read this book. The book gives a much greater and realistic account of what happened at the beaches of Normandy. Character development is given in much greater detail, with a better understanding of the lives of key individuals on both sides of the beach. There is also an indepth discussion of what went wrong, especially with regards to the allied bombing of the beaches prior to the actual invasion. For those of you who think they know everything that happened on June 6th, 1944, I promise you will find yourself saying,"I didn't know that!", after you finish this book.
