Rating: Summary: It was a concise and well established history lesson Review: I've no love for Jim Goad. But i've read this book four times. One must always take into consideration the perspective of the author. Malcolm X began with the concept of needing to educate and enlighten the whole of the african-american community before the issues of unity could be established. Malcolm ,as Goad poignantly demonstrates, was asassinated when he was becoming less, and less, a voice with religious overtones, and more and more, a voice of political dissent, to the tune of class conciousness. Goad is the Malcolm X of the white under-class. Unfortunately [or fortunately?], he hasn't the temperment for fiery oral diatribe; only the written form. Not to mention that he lacks, by his own admission, the essential ethical guidelines with which to truly be a voice of sustained reason. This book was [perhaps still?] a paradigm shifter of it's time. And i would recommend it to anyone interested in comparative socio-economic studies. Particularly those within academia, whom may find themselves slowly becoming the elitists they once despised.
Rating: Summary: THE GREATEST NON-FICTION BOOK EVER WRITTEN Review: Make no mistake: 'The Redneck Manifesto' is a rant. It's also the most direct, honest rant ever written. Goad is the most uninhibited and courageous writer ever and he's definitely not in it for the money or approval. Goad smacks people upside the head with raw truth and strips away all their irrational ideas in order to open up real intellectual thought. There are few, if any, books that can match the depth of the cultural analysis. Goad is too intelligent to focus on historical figures or political policy to fully support his ideas; he looks toward the age-old system. The book is very important to the academic community and what colleges teach. The burned out, embittered, ex-hippy college professors are teaching tomorrow's leaders a completely irrational and emotional view point, which will ultimately create deeper cultural division and a new wave of destructive pity for the black community. 'The Redneck Manifesto' maybe a more powerful read than the 'The Communist Manifesto' by Karl Marx. The other great quality of this book is that it's absolutely hilarious. It takes a pure genius to write a book with a rock solid argument and a sense of humor at the same time. Chapters like 'Playin' Hard' and 'Prayin' Hard' had me laughing to the point of tears, but that chapter still had very valid points. Goad's humor may not be for everyone, but for those that get it, the humor alone makes the book worthwhile. The author also does an in depth investigation of redneck culture and gives it a rarely seen look at an embarrassed community. I have almost memorized the story 'Freedom Rider'. Goad closes the book just as furiously as he opened it. When he talks about shocking and offending people toward the end, it's not really the point of the book, however, it's a desirable side effect. I've never bothered to read the positive reviews of 'The Redneck Manifesto' (I already know why I like the book), but I have read the negative reviews. Personal attacks on the author are the most common. It's great that these people have their own opinion about Goad, but they give little reason to not read his book. Some people feel he has given a one-sided argument and think he should consider other ideas and information that have been beaten into the ground. Goad assumes the reader is already familiar with the well-known history of racism. There are also those who completely missed, intentionally or unintentionally, his sense of humor. There are plenty of people who have a lot to gain from 'white guilt'. Some say the book is full of 'vulgar dismissals', focusing on the delivery rather than the package. It's not a nice book. Goad is out destroying false, popular myths. It's a healthy type of destruction.
Rating: Summary: Exposes an idea that the liberals have somehow embedded Review: in modern society. It's now considered cool to make jokes about rednecks in polite society, but if you use a similar derogatory word like n****rs or beaners you will be censored or arrested. This book provides a balanced view of the new inequities brought to you by the liberal thought police.
Rating: Summary: another form of racisim? Review: As a black male who went to college, made friends, lived and worked in north eastern and central Pennsylvania for the last 14 years I had to get this book. I have serveral good friends who some may call "rednecks" or "hicks" or whatever, but I never considered it a form of bigotry. The author did a great job explaining the origins of poor whites and how little they've changed. I liked how he showed that NON WEALTHY whites and blacks are more similar they some may think. He also hit home on the issue of ECONOMICS has the driving force that keeps NON WEALTHY blacks and whites at each others throats. The only thing that kept this from being a perfect rating was the fact that the last chapter seemed to run on a little too much, but that's all. If your the type that's interested in interracial relations, I would recommend this book. I don't think you'll see things the same again after reading it.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: Probably the best way to describe this book is "it is the beginning" Goad's book "The Redneck Manifesto" is like an introduction to a whole new school of thought about many things we were taught and took for granted. Anyone who reads this will end up buying almost every book he uses as references (and there are many) and study the subjects he covers in much more detail. "The Redneck Manifesto" isn't about undermining blacks or any other minorities hardships, it is about telling the truth of our history and exposing our society's hypocrisy concerning race. Stop reading this review and order the book, then get your credit card ready because you will be using his reference pages as "must get" lists sooner than you think.
Rating: Summary: Sociological Masterpiece. Review: A painfully accurate, cogent, literary bulwark against the cultural marxism pervading our great nation. Should be required reading to balance out what is being taught on our nation's ivy covered indoctrination camps (universities). Excellent account of early American history regarding White Slaves (euphemistically known as indentured servants). Provides great argument against black slave reparations. Really shows the hipocrosy of the so-called "progressive and tolerant" crowd, whom would talk about working class whites in a manner they would disdain if it were directed against hyphenated Americans. For me it weakens the common discourse one hears on "white privilege" and strengthens the notion of class being more important than race in the United States.
Rating: Summary: Goad hit the nail on the head Review: Jim Goad, in his "Redneck Manifessto" assumes a role most white-bread middle Americans would probably never cast him in. For a self-proclaimed piece of "white trash", Mr. Goad proves not only unusually insightful, but extremely articulate in a manner those same middle Americans would not expect from a "hillbilly". The actual topics of conversation are ones that have suffered from a terribly long run of having been either ignored, repressed, or completely mis-handled and misunderstood by people in general. Mr. Goad deftly brings many subtexts to the surface regarding American race issues and convincingly sets them in a clear light; a light that makes far greater sense than the pablum the American people have been spoon fed for many decades. Perhaps the greatest message radiating from the pages of his work is that race is not the significant factor in so-called "race relations", but rather power; money power and the political power that it buys; the tendency to preserve power at all costs, no matter who gets hurt. The real enemy lies elsewhere, but you will have to read for yourself and see how we have been lead down the garden path and sold a bill of choicely rotten goods. Black, white, or otherwise, any American interested in the truth about race relations owes it to themself to take up this volume and read carefully. In fact, black Americans might profit more from the reading than any others. I promise you will not be disappointed. Goad speaks very directly and colorfully, and I will say that all his strong language is offered in the best spirit of honest inquiry into the issues addressed therein and I believe the volume would actually be diminished in value without it.
Rating: Summary: I must be brief,... Review: ...Ricki Lake is starting! Excellent book! Well researched (as expected from Herr Answer Me!) Excellent points! (drop your 1040 EZ, and take up arms, folks!) Extremely entertaining! (easy reading history lesson for an MTV / Vin Diesel attention span generation!) Two thumbs, and a bucktooth, way up! Will wash those cephalic boll weevils right out of your hair. Raises the roof, and burns your assumed history to the ground! Laugh whatever guilt you (may) have away with clever writing and biting jokes, while cutting to the core of 'the problem' with your teeth! Recommended reading for all, "it doesn't matter if you're black or white (or any combination of the rainbow). "
Rating: Summary: for the love of Lincoln, read this book! Review: I liked this book so much that I feel obligated to write a review. I was hesitant to read it at first seeing as how the plight of the redneck is not (ehhh) high on my list of concerns (I'm not a redneck in case you were wondering at this point), but after reading the first chapter (the first paragraph, for that matter), I was reeled in like a flopping flounder finding a surprise in his earthworm lunch. This book made me feel very naive and gullible for believing what my history teachers taught me. Mrs. Krabapple would have a hey day with this one! No, seriously, this book will evoke a hearty guffaw from anyone with an inkling of a sense of humor and an appreciation for history that's not sugar-coated.
Rating: Summary: Hee Haw! Review: This book is nearly a work of genius. The only problem that I had with it was that it contained a slough of anti-christian statements. And dont mind the vulgar language either, it adds to sarcastic and accusatory ring to the book. Otherwise, Jesus would probably agree with most of Mr. Goad's conclustions. The sheer and complete hypocracy of the 'politically correct' crowd is here in the fact that they blame lower class whites (read: 'hillbillies and rednecks') for the nation's problems. These 'rednecks' are also targeted by the mainstream media and the populace for ethnic stereotyping and scapegoating much the way blacks were before the 1960's. Goad reveals how the big conflict in society is between classes, and how the ruling elite have agitated lower class blacks and whites against each other so that they would avoid focusing on thier real situation in life. This book is a quick, lucid and easy read, but if you want to read the best part, go straight to chapter eight, the chapter on 'hate groups,' gun nuts and tax protesters. Goad makes mincemeat once and for all of liberal claims about these groups, that they are crazy and paranoid. Goad says that IT'S NOT PARANOIA IF IT'S TRUE and that you are crazy NOT to be paranoid. Blind faith in the System is pure insanity. Despite this, Goad makes the case that he is not a conservative or reactionary, and certainly not a liberal Democrat. He'll get mad if you try to place him on the political spectrum, so don't bother. He calls his views "enlightened sociopathy." Like the cover says, this is a truly unique and original book. Thanks for dissing Springfield, Rich White Liberals and thier hypocracy. Now is time to say sayonara.
