Rating: Summary: Courage in every sense of the word Review: I read this book many years ago and it brought me to both tears and amazement. The author's description of Lance's heroism, family, his classmates and the situations that unfolded around him touched me. I retired from the USAF in '97 but I actually tried to be, in some small way, like Lance throughout my career even though many aspects are not the same; I was enlisted and spent my career in emergency generator power in the Civil Engineers and on top of that I am a woman. But that did not stop me from trying to emulate the honor and integrity that he seemed to have in abundance. As soon as I became resposible to other young airmen in guiding their careers I used the same approach with them as I did for myself. It might not have worked on them all but I know of a few people that it did, myself included. I believe that he would have liked to have known that he made an impact on my personal and military life. Thanks to the author writing the book, for his and his cellmates sacrifices and to Lance who will never know what he did for me.....
Rating: Summary: One of the GREATEST stories of human courage and honor Review: I read this book while stationed at the USAFA. It is powerful and moving. Once read it will stay with you forever!
Rating: Summary: DUTY - HONOR - DEDICATION - Never to be forgotten! Review: I wish that there were some way that every man and woman in our Armed Forces could read this story. To me, it is all defining of the pain, anguish, despair and sacrifices they must be prepared to suffer and endure in order to perform their DUTY with the HONOR and DEDICATION that they have sworn in their pledge of allegiance to their country. This is a riveting story, not only of a brave young man, but of his comrades in arms who placed their lives on the line in their attempts to save him. Their courage must have been an inspiration to him, helping him rise to new heights of endurance and committment. Lt. Sijan not only pledged his allegiance in words but, more importantly, in deeds. I pray that his actions will be an inspiration to other young sevice men and women and that theirs and successive generations will remember and revere him for all time. Further, I would hope that every home in America would keep a copy of this book to remind them of what it truly means to "die for ones' country." A committment that we all must be prepared to make if liberty is to prevail.
Rating: Summary: A definitive work on the subject of Courage! Review: Lance Peter Sijan is a hero of our time! His story unfolds in the book "Into the Mouth of The Cat" and we are instantly capitvated by not only his courage in the face of his captors but we are also amazed at his will to survive, and assist his other fellow captives in the Hanoi Hilton Prison. We are so unaware of the heros of the Vietnam War and there were many who displayed great courage and perserverance despite the fact that others viewed the war as unwinnable or corupt. Please read this story and then you too will understand why the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs decided to name their freshman student dorimtory after Capt Sijan, a hero of our time.
Rating: Summary: The Story of Lance P. Sijan, American Hero Review: Lance Sijan was shot down over Laos while on a bombing mission against the Ho Chi Minh trail. This is his incredible story of the rescue attempt that failed, and his escape and evasion through the rugged limestone karst region of Indochina with two broken legs. After capture, he overpowered his guard and attempted an escape, unable to walk because of his legs. During torture in the Hanoi Hilton, fellow POW's recall his only response was "My name is Sijan!" Lance Sijan was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, posthumously. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title
Rating: Summary: True Hero Review: Lance Sijon will live in my memory for the rest of my life. I read this book about seven years ago, and his struggle for freedom and life is an example for all warriors.
Rating: Summary: An Epic Story Review: Outstanding! Lance Sijan's story of escape, evasion and capture in the Nam is one that will tug the heartstrings of even the rough and tough. If you haven't read this book, you need to. This story will leave a lasting impression on you for the rest of your life. One of my top 5 ever!
Rating: Summary: Worth Remembering Review: The rules say: The President may award, and present in the name of Congress, a medel of honor of appropriate design, with ribbons and appurtenances, to a person who, while a member of the Army, Navy or Air Force, distinguished himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyone the call of duty. They also say that the actions of the person receiving the award cannot be performed while he is acting under orders, he must have originated the action himself, and that if the recipient had not performed this action other people would not have thought less of him. That's a pretty tall order. Lance Sijan won the medal in Viet Nam. What more can you really say of him that has any meaning? The book tells his story. On November 9, 1967 he ejected from his crippled fighter bomber over Laos. Badly injured, and virtually without supplies he evaded capture for six weeks. Finally caught he overpowered his guards and escaped, only to be captured again. He resisted his captors to the end. He died two weeks later.
Rating: Summary: Incredible Courage Review: This book is the best account of bravery and heroism that I have ever read. He was a model officer until the day that he died. Every American should read this book
