Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A very very helpful contribution
Review: I have found this book to be really helpful both for my course work and interest in masculinities in the military, and at the level of pure readability. It was refreshing to see such a wide scope of analyses from different disciplinary backgrounds, as well as historically and comparatively. I particularly liked the reliance on more anthropological type work that really brought the experiences of military people to life. This is not only a good read, but also a rich resource. I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in broadening their understanding of gender within the context of an institution that is becoming increasingly important to the lives of many people around the world. It is surprising that the military has waited so long to get this treatment, though, like many of the contributors, I guess I am less certain of its potential for cultural change. I certainly won't be joinin!'
