Summary: A pleasure to read
Review: The Persian Empire has been a neglected subject in ancient history. J.M. Cook does justice to the Persians in writing this cohesive, erudite history. The author emphasizes Persian political and military history, but also includes chapters on religion, art, and social customs. This reader learns that Persian hegemony extended to Babylon, Egypt, Asia, and Parthia. One of the most interesting subjects includes information about Persian interaction with the Medes (Iranians). The footnotes added to my reading enjoyment and a useful appendix outlines the kings' lineage. As added features, the maps and illustrations provide me with a pictorial guide through ancient Persia. The Persian Empire remains a thorough, useful book to understand these ancient people of the Near East.
