Rating: 5 stars
Summary: An illustrated history of thirteen great Civil War battles
Review: In the "Battlefields of the Civil War." the third volume of the "Rebels and Yankees" series, author William C. Davis and Technical Advisor Russ A. Pritchard look at thirteen of the greatest and bloodiest battles of the Civil War. The highlight of this volume is not the text but rather the illustrations, which feature color photographs of uniforms, weapons, flags, and ordnance, as well as contemporary photographs of excavated artifacts and full-color maps of each battle. From First Manassas to Nashville (the book looks at the Siege of Vicksburg but not of St. Petersberg/Richmond) this book continues the series tradition of showing you things you probably have never seen in illustrated books about the Civil War such as identification badges, hand gernandes, buttons, a mountain howitzer, and a map of the battle of Mobile Bay. Do not expect to see just the same old famous photographs. Instead, anticipate being surprised and delighted often by what you see in these books. Any serious student of the Civil War will want the "Rebels and Yankees" series in their collection.
