Rating: Summary: The rebuttal is based on selected numbers Review: 1. World Almanac and Book of Facts population 1937 did not included the LARGE refuge population in NanJing from other regions, this make an underestimate of murdered people possible
2. The population no. published on the World Almanac 1938 is from the Japanese occupation authority
3. In his memoirs, journalist Matsumoto Shigeharu, the Shanghai bureau chief of Domei News Agency, recalled a circulating rumor among his colleagues. "The reason that the Yanagawa Corps [the 10th Army] is advancing [to Nanjing] quite rapidly is due to the tacit consent among the officers and men that they could loot and rape as they wish." This was seen as the main cause that the brutalities were committed by ordinary infantry troops, not just by some specially-assigned killing squads.
4. In Japan, there are four opinions about Nanjing Massacre.
1)less than 10,000 were killed but most of them were combatants
2)40,000 were killed
3)starting from 120,000 or 130,000 and ending with upward of 250,000 were killed
4)250,000 to 300,000 were killed
The majority of Japanese historians belong to the third group and a minority belong to the second, while the first and fourth groups are considered on the fringe.
5.Is killing of 5000 civilian a massacre? 10000 a massacre? 50000 a massacre?
Rating: Summary: Must read before "The Rape of Nanking" Review: Are there any questions raised by readers of Chang's sadistic book that can possibly compete with the literature of the Marquis de Sade? We wonder if they have had the following questions :"The book says that over 300,000 citizens were killed and the most of the corpses were burnt by kerosene within six weeks. If it were so, dozens of incinerators as large as that of Auschwitz would have been necessary. Who has ever seen such things within and around the closed space of the walled castle?" "Also, the book claims that from 20,000 to 80,000 women were raped. We hear of the enormous number of babies born after fall of Berlin by the Russian Army. Is there a recorded account of the flood of babies that mixed Japanese and Chinese parentage after the fall of Nanking?" For readers who are equipped with common sense, such questions must abundantly come to mind. Now, let us treat the 'Nanking Massacre' as a murder case. How many corpses have been found? Who are the victims? Who are the eyewitnesses? What are the motives of the offenders? For those basic questions, we must justly prove the facts through fair procedures in criminal suit. Those who prosecute the 'Nanking Massacre' insist that insist that there were certain number of corpses, and focus on the testimonies of eyewitnesses and also the motives of the offenders. However, the admissibility and probative value of such claims and evidence are not acceptable in the courts of civilized Nations. Surprisingly, these facts have never been known to the western world. But only the false propaganda, which claims that the horrible incident (Nanking Massacre) occurred, is now becoming established in the U.S., as the anti-Japanese activities intended.
Rating: Summary: What well-fabricated lies! Review: As a son of survivors in Singapore/Malaysia who personnally knew of people who were murdered by the Japanese, and who live amongst children and grandchildren of survivors, we all know better. The Nanking massacre was by no means unique amongst the atrocities commited by the Japanese during the war. All the Singaporeans and Malaysians of Chinese descent from the older generation will narrate to you all the horrifying tales of people being herded off to remote locations, forced to dig trenches, and then machine-gunned before being buried secretly. An estimated 40000 Chinese died in Singapore alone due to these massacres. Were these fabricated by the Chinese government also? In case one doesn't know, Singapore (an ex-British colony) is a sovereign state thousands of miles from China. The Japanese conducted the massacres to weed out the resistance groups who have been supporting China during the war against Japanese aggression.
Rating: Summary: Japanese Cannibalism Review: Cannibalism was very much a part of Japanese culture before the end of the Second World War. Ask George H.W. Bush, the 41st President. He was shot down over the Pacific during the war and was very nearly captured. Had he been captured, he was later told by one of the Japanese sailors in pursuit, he almost certainly would've been eaten. And certainly many American pilots who were shot down over Japan ended up on the menu. Their livers seem to have been especially popular.
One thing the Japanese elders seem to have done an especially good job of teaching the young'uns is gang rape. Living in Japan, one constantly reads about gang rapes committed by university students. One university, Waseda, considered an "elite" university in Japan, even had a club dedicated to the pursuit of gang rape. The club, called "Super Free" held "parties" where women were given spiked drinks and then repeatedly gang raped. Reading news like this, it's certainly easy to see how Nanking could've happened.
Rating: Summary: Sick... Review: I've never written a review on a book that I've never read. In fact, I usually laugh at the people who do.
But any book that attempts to minimize genocide or cruelty by parcing out the smallest details, or by arguing about the specific numbers of people killed, is sick.
Defending it is probably even sicker, as the reviewer, unlike the author, is not even getting paid to do it.
The Holocaust happened...Cambodia happened...The Gulags (and Stalin) happened...Rowanda happened...and guess what, Nanking happened.
The past is the past, but denying it will make it our future.
Enough of that...it's back to reviewing Harry Potter and The Da Vinci Code for me.
Rating: Summary: Whoever betrays the history, he is going to be punished. Review: If Amazon had negative ratings, I do select them. If a book goes far away from the truth, whether it still worths reading?! Whoever betrays the history, he is going to be punished.
Rating: Summary: International Military Tribunal for the Far East November 1 Review: International Military Tribunal for the Far East November 12, 1948.
War Crimes In China
The Nanking Massacre Numerous eye-witness accounts of the Nanking Massacre were provided by Chinese civilian survivors and western nationals living in Nanking at the time. The accounts described thousands of innocent civilians buried alive, used as targets for bayonet practice, or shot in large groups and thrown into the Yangtze River. Rampant rapes (and gang rapes) of women ranging from age seven to over seventy were reported. The international community estimated that within the six weeks of the massacre, 20,000 women were raped, many of them subsequently murdered or mutilated; and over 300,000 people were killed, often with the most inhumane brutality.
Dr. Robert Wilson, a surgeon who was born and raised in Nanking and educated at Princeton and Harvard Medical School, testified that beginning on December 13, "the hospital filled up and was kept full to overflowing" during the next six weeks. The patients usually bore bayonet or bullet wounds; many of the women patients had been sexually molested.
The international community had filed many protests to the Japanese Embassy. Bates, an American professor of history at the University of Nanking during the Japanese occupation, provided evidence that the protests were forwarded to Tokyo and were discussed in great detail between Japanese officials and the U.S. ambassador in Tokyo. Arnold Brackman, a reporter at the trial and author of the book The Other uremberg, commented: "The Rape of Nanking was not the kind of isolated incident common to all wars. It was deliberate. It was policy. It was known in Tokyo." Yet it was allowed to continue for over six weeks. The question at the trial was whether each of the defendants were responsible for the massacre. Death Sentence as related to the Rape of Nanking Hirota, Baron Koki (1878-1948). Ambassador to the Soviet Union, 1928-31; foreign minister, 1933-36; premier, 1936-37. Rating: Summary: Get a realistic picture of "Nanking Massacre". Review: It is absolutly essential that you have solid ground with historical facts if you want to argue for/against a greatly controversial historical topic like this so-called "Nanking Massacre". This book provides readers powerful and secure basis of logic and shows how much the "Nanking Massacre" story has been told on the basis of irrational, sloppy and sometimes very emotional arguments which have never been substantiated and have been distorted by political ideologies. It was the Tokyo Trial that made people in the world including the Japanese themselves believe that the Japanese Imperial Army was so evil they committed barbaric atrocities such as the "Nanking Massacre", "Bataan Death March", etc.etc.... (Well, as for "Bataan", it is true that the Allied soldiers walked hundreds of miles with little food and sicknesses, but the Japanese soldiers walked the same distance with 40 kilogram burdens and little food and sickness, as well. Almost 80% of the Japanese soldiers in the South East Asia died of starvation and disease, by the way.) Anyway, given the fact that the war time history of modern Japan from 1931 to 1945 was, in fact, made by the trial, and they have been inculcated as "facts" by educating people with the history books that based on the verdicts of the trial for a half century, you have to demonstrate that the every verdict of the Tokyo Trial was never substantiated before you convince people that the "Nanking Massacre" story is highly questionable, at least to say. Whole problem lies here. You have to refute the every verdict of the trial one by one. Otherwise, people would say that even the "Nanking Massacre" was proved to be a false accusation, yet the Japanese Army did this and that, so the war criminals are still guilty, and so are the Japanese "revisionists". Evidently, because the refutation of the "Nanking Massacre" has been successful in Japan, the left-wingers in Japan are sifting their points of argument to "Burn all, Rape all, Kill all policy" of the Japanese Army which had already been debunked by many researchers. (It was, in fact, policy of the Chinese Army, not Japanese.) So, it seems long, long way ahead for Japan to clear her name. But, as they say, you have to make the first step if you want to climb a mountain. And, I think, this book made one secure step towards the truth of the history with pride. Must read if you really want to know the truth. As for the first step, at the least.
Rating: Summary: Filth Review: There's rubbish, and then there's filth. Common rubbish comes from simple ignorance or lack of thought; this is filth that tries purposefully to distort and mislead, made all the more disgusting by the magnitude of the deception and severity of the subject. I read this book out of curiosity and by the end (and it was a struggle to finish), I felt like I'd just taken a bath in sewage. Let me ask this simple question: if you were prosecuting a mass murder case, would you rely on the testimony of the murderer's buddies? I hope not.
Take another example of deception. Look at the reviewer "Gaelle Biernaski"'s comments. It (She? he?) pretends to be quite objective about the subject matter. Yet look at its sole other review where it attacks Iris's Chang work on the Nanking massacre. It is clearly written by a Japanese person with a egocentric and distorted perception of reality. Don't be fooled!
Rating: Summary: 150 pages of lies Review: This book is typical of the denial of the evil that was the Japanese regime prior to its destruction by the US in WWII. The sad fact is that Japanese school children have never been taught the true nature of the brutality of the Japanese military, and we now have several new generations who live in ignorance of the truth about Japanese militarism in the first half of the Twentieth Century.
The authors of this book are no different than other propagandists who deny the numerous other holocausts in the last century of the Armenians, the Ukrainians, the Jews, and the horrible atrocities the Japanese inflicted on the Chinese, the Koreans, and anyone that the Japanese army fought such as the Americans, the British, and other native populations in SE Asia.
Having spent more time in Japan than I care to admit, this book is actually a reflection of the knowledge of the majority of the Japanese population about their crimes against humanity during the 30's and 40's, with the exception of those scum of the war who actually committed millions of atrocities and know better, but are too cowardly to come forward and expose books like this to be the lie that they are. At least they are consistent in their shameful approach to life. This is a society in denial of its crimes against humanity, using humans as guinea pigs for the "experiments" as well as their brutality against civilians. Even the German Siemens representative, John Rabe in his diaries, who has been called the Oskar Schindler of China, wrote a first hand account of these atrocities, but the authors of this book ignore the truth. And of course the Japanese critics of his book, "The Good Man of Nanking" are the same ones who favorably review this piece of trash.
The authors of this book should be ashamed, but they are able to write this nonsense because there was no Nuremberg equivalent after the war ended because McArthur kept the military industrial infrastructure intact out of the fear of communist pressures. It would have been like keeping a murderer like Saddam in power to keep the Shiia out of power.
Luckily this fable is very short and can be read in less than a couple hours so only one anti-vomit pill is needed to get through it. The positive reviewers of this book are the same kind of gullible apologists who have no understanding of putting propaganda like this in proper perspective. The spawn of Neville Chamberlain. Just how many pictures do you need of atrocities to understand that this book is pure fiction.? You won't see those pictures in this book, but anyone who has any sense of history can view them. This book is the OJ defense on a grand scale.
This book makes "Mein Kampf" look like an honest discussion of the issues facing Europe after WWI. This is a book written by citizens of a country which should hold its head in shame for centuries to attempt to atone for the sins of their fathers. The sad fact is they are ignorant of them. I read this book and wrote this review on the anniversary of another cowardly attack, on Pearl Harbor, and held off submitting it to see if I had cooled off after reading this book. Sorry, but I only got madder.
