Summary: A nice discussion of a somewhat neglected topic
Review: There have been many excellent books on the United States submarine campaign against Japan, all written from the U.S. point of view. This book provides a badly-needed discussion of the hapless target of that campaign.

Making use of Japanese sources, Parillo describes why the Japanese were so slow to adopt effective convoy tactics. The bottom line, it would seem, is that the Japanese were so thoroughly indoctrinated with a combination of Mahanism and bushido that they were unprepared to take antisubmarine operations seriously.

The book discusses Japanese shipbuilding practices and contrasts these to the phenomenally successful U.S. shipbuilding effort. There is quite a bit of statistical information on the makeup of the Japanese merchant fleet, including valuable appendices.

This book will be of interest to any student of the Pacific War, and particularly the U.S. submarine campaign during that war.
