Rating: Summary: McCarthy: Peddler of Holocaust denial Review: .
Prof. Justin McCarthy is an amazing historian. Objective, thorough, with a writing style that sweeps you along. He must also be credited for being one of the few western historians who applied himself to this much neglected arena of history: the story of the Turks. There are some groups who thrive on hating the Turks, and that makes the handful of western historians who write in a balanced (and not bigoted) way prime targets.
This book is about the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire, covering the conditions why the Sick Man of Europe was "wounded by its enemies, and finally murdered." With so many enemies, Dr. McCarthy asks, how could the constantly attacked empire have survived for as long as it did?
The focus of this book is not about the Armenians and Greeks. These peoples constituted only part of the Ottoman populace. Yet, some among these groups make a hobby of denigrating anything Turkish. And one unfortunate offshoot of Amazon's wonderful policy in allowing members of the public to speak their mind is inviting those with ulterior motives to spread their propaganda.
One of these ethnic Turcophobes gave himself the name of "François De Couture," and his purpose is to try and discredit the reputation of Justin McCarthy. The non-review this zealot has composed has nothing to do with the book.
The hypocritical "genocide industry" has banded together with the Armenians, adopting their awful smear tactics instead of sticking to the historical facts. The cited "Holocaust and Genocide Studies" represents a partisan agenda, and the particular paper this fraud has mentioned ("Professional Ethics and the Denial of Armenian Genocide," written by three ethics-challenged "genocide scholars") has nothing to do with Justin McCarthy. The fraud throws a name of a so-called "Holocaust denier," immorally trying to link McCarthy with one who has issues with a proven genocide.
Furthermore, we are given names that supposedly know better, such as Frédéric Paulin and Daniel Panzac; unfortunately, their claims are not instantly available, but the Armenian chapter of McCarthy's "Muslim and Minorities" may be found(...) and the reader may confirm exactly how immaculate, thorough and fair Prof. McCarthy's demographic methodology is. If these cited fellows are anywhere in the same league as another the fraud tells us about, Hilmar Kaiser, then their work can be trusted no further than can be thrown. The agenda-ridden latter is far from what we would call an unbiased scholar.
Dr. McCarthy agrees with the high end of figures of Armenian mortality, 600,000... since every "European" estimate of the period gave a pre-war population figure ranging from one million to 1.6 million. Simply subtract the one million survivors the Armenians themselves concede.
The fraud calls Prof. McCarthy "pro-Turkish." That is exactly how Admiral Mark Bristol was painted, but such is the fate of anyone who is "pro-truth" in the hands of these slanderers. Prof. McCarthy also called it on the money during hearings on H. Res. 398: the Turks carried on the mature policy of putting past ills behind them and to move forward... since harping on the over half-million Turks/Muslims/Jews who were murdered by the Armenians would have bred hatred. Thus, if the Turks did not speak for themselves in the wholly biased west, the professor's statement could not have been truer: "no one spoke for the Turks." No further comment is needed in the fraud's ironic statement: "Claming the genocide as being a lie is like saying that Armenians are liars."
An insidious charge is made that Prof. McCarthy may have received grants from Turkish associations. It is common practice for professors to get grants from various sources; the fact of the matter is McCarthy has been earning his salary from the American University of Louisville, and he doesn't need grants to compromise his integrity. Armenian "scholars" such as UCLA's AEF-sponsored Hovannisian and the Zoryan Institute's Dadrian have been getting plenty of money from Armenian organizations, and ultimately it is the quality of the research that must be considered... not the source of financing.
I'm not familiar with the "Turks and Armenians" book the fraud tells us about, but what we must consider within this page is "The Ottoman Peoples and the End of Empire"; Amazon has provided an inside glimpse, and the publishing houses are a British firm and Oxford University Press ... neither of which have nothing to do with Turkish financing.
And let's not forget it is the job of any responsible and professional historian to "correct" poor history that has been presented in a purposely maligned way for many years. Should we still read in American textbooks of the savagery of the American Indian?
As far as another non-reviewer who defamatorily labels Prof. McCarthy as a "Hired Lobbyist at Work" let us correct his statement, "the author has spoken to the U.S. Congress on behalf of Turkish Embassy front organizations." There is no shortage of "genocide nuts" who speak during these hearings; meanwhile, there are only a handful of experts in the area of non-biased Turkish history, operating from the United States. (A contemporary example of "no one [speaks] for the Turks.") Despite what this slanderer claims, Prof. McCarthy does not get a nickel for his participation in such hearings. The only motivation for this great academician of integrity is to perform his own admirable part in allowing for the truth to prevail.

Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT!!! Deserves more than 5 stars!!!! Review: A comprehensive, scholarly, factual account of the history of the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire told from a balanced perspective. This books tells it like it is, with plenty of factual research. I know most Europeans won't like this because it exposes their devious (and ultimately unsuccessful) plans to carve up the Empire for their own ends, shamefully using the minorities in the bargain. All in all, it's a good read--high ly recommended, factual history--should be required reading for ANY history class!
Rating: Summary: In line with "The Imperial Legacy" Review: Justin McCarthy added an excellent work of an area of interest that was neglected by so many for such a long time. The other works of him that I am referring to are his book, "Death and Exile" and the "Palestine" related statistical historical study. Despite funny claims that he works with Turkish Republic (as if Turkish Republic can 'afford' anything like this!), in fact, his writings are objective, empirical, well-founded, and well-detailed. In fact, I find his work to be in line with the "Imperial Legacy," another work by many scholars on the imperial influence left by the rule of the Ottoman (Osmanli) Empire. This is a great book and I was one of the luckiest people to have it now! (It will be some time before you can own it because of the troubles of new releases!) I strongly recommend it to anyone to understand the political and historical implications of hate and humiliation against Turks. On the other hand, Mr. McCarthy can be brutally honest when and if it comes to shocking findings about stupid, unplanned, and arrogant acts of Ottomans, especially in their last times. It is a great read, wonderful book!
Rating: Summary: Finally the truth comes out Review: Much atrocities were committed on Turks and Moslems under the tutelege of European powers towards the end of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th century. European powers just watched it as they did in Bosnis recently. In western sources these atrocities and genocide against the moslems by the christian subjects of the empire were flip-flopped and many histories talk about moslem atrocities against christian subjects. FINALLY THE TRUTH COMES OUT. Excellent book-highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Well-written and researched Review: One of the best and most objective accounts of the events leading up to the demise of the Ottoman Empire I've ever read! It's truly worth the time and effort to read. You will come away with a fresh perspective, ready to ask more questions. That is what a good book is supposed to make you do.
Rating: Summary: The “Paul RASSINIER” of the Armenian Genocide: McCarthy’s ga Review: The Ottoman history department has been found by the help of the Turkish government financing, and had as first aim to promote the denial of the Armenian genocide (The financing and foundation of the “Turkish studies” could be found in Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Vol. 9, Number 1, Spring 1995, pages 1-22 Professional Ethics and the Denial of Armenian Genocide). Not only these study institutes have been used as rampant propellers for the denial of a known genocide, but the foundation of programmes in the Middle East department of prestigious Universities such as Princeton (See Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Vol. 9, Number 1, Spring 1995, pages 1-22 Professional Ethics and the Denial of Armenian Genocide. Also many articles have treated about the subject, one for example appeared in The Chronicle of Higher Education, October 27, 1995) is without precedent in the history of corruption of intellectuals paid to deny what we may call the undeniable. McCarthy is one of these intellectuals, it is not only that he use methods such as the ones used by Paul Rassinier, (Holocaust denier, the first one to introduce demographic calculations to deny the Holocaust) but his techniques could be questioned and even rejected due to mathematical manipulations, an analyse of McCarthy questionable calculations could be found in a French work: Négationnisme et théorie des populations stables : le cas du génocide arménien. By Frédéric Paulin, (completing a Ph.D, EHESS) or also in the analyse of McCarthy work “Muslim and Minorities…” by the expert Dr. Daniel Panzac, in “Analyse bibliographique…” Hilmar Kaiser a German expert on the Armenian genocide also critic McCarthy calculation techniques in an interview by Dirk van Delft in the NRC Handelsblad, Page 51, Amsterdam, Saturday, 27 May 2000. “The American researcher Justin McCarthy, cites the number 600 000 for Armenians and 2.5 million for the Moslems killed. But if you put the figures next to one another, it does not make sense. There are elementary errors in arithmetic. In demographic circles, the McCarthy figures are ignored. I know insurance company employees who don't pay any attention to McCarthy's figures. Not because McCarthy is pro-Turkish, but because his calculations are wrong.” McCarthy participation on a new book published directly from the Turkish government: The Armenians in the late Ottoman period. From The Turkish Historical Society for the Council of Culture, Arts and Publications of Grand National Assembly of Turkey, Ankara 2001. Or his direct involvement of the newly founded Institute of Armenian study the new invention of the Turkish government in order to promote and propagate denial. Also must be noted, his presentation during the hearings on H. Res. 398, a resolution recognising the Armenian genocide by the United-States, where he even glorify the Turkish government: “The Turkish government felt that pressing the Turkish case against Armenians and others would rekindle old hatreds and invite war, so the Turks said nothing of their grievances. This was the right decision for the time. The unfortunate result was that no one spoke for the Turks.” Very intriguing statement made by McCarthy, when the Turkish governments from the beginning encouraged hatred against Armenians by financing anti-Armenian works, even reviews such as “These Armenian dogs” have been published with the acceptance eyes of the government. Another surprising speech made by McCarthy was republished in the Turkish press review Wed. 25 Oct 00. "However, the US Congress should have rejected the bill not just because of the political reasons, but because it is a lie." This statement made by McCarthy is not one that a professional could afford to make. Claming the genocide as being a lie is like saying that Armenians are liars, not only this, it is also saying that every specialists in the field, are liars, the Holocaust and Genocide association is a liar association composed of liars. McCarthy didn’t say the proposition is a mistake, or the genocide clam is made by people that are mistaken, but simply say that it is a lie, exactly the same kind of words used by the Turkish government. Like this is not enough, McCarthy even receives founds directly from Turkish study associations financed by the Turkish government itself. For example he received and probably still receive ITS grants(Institute of Turkish study, promoted grant as one of the major aim to finance deniers), as well as ARIT grants (American Research Institute in Turkey, grants and finance American searchers, and also a major aim to propagate denial). McCarthy in fact even recognised that his aim was to re-write Turkish state picture at a conference in Bosphorus University, a university that is one of the major places where denialist work are created. The fact is that he haven’t only admitted that he will try to correct Turkish “image” but also that other “professional” such as him are working for the same aim, McCarthy speech has been reported in the Assembly of Turkish American Associations, ATA-USA, Fall 1995 - Winter 1996 "Dr. McCarthy stated that he, Dr. Lowry, Professor Stanford Shaw, and many others have been working to correct the image of Turkey end Turkish History in the United State. " (p.70) The Assembly of Turkish American Associations receives also many grants from the republic of Turkey, and is the center of the denialist instrument in the United-State, must be mentioned here that McCarthy implication with this association can not be clearer, when, probably by the demand of this association, McCarthy wrote a book titled, Turks and Armenians (must also be mentioned here that the book has been published by the Assembly of Turkish American association (ATAA)), the title of this work has in fact nothing to do with it’s content, since all what the book does is to deny the Armenian genocide, make the victims the aggressors etc (...)
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT!!! Deserves more than 5 stars!!!! Review: Yesterday's Ottoman Empire today's Turkey is probably stuck in one of the tougest and oldest neighboorhoods in the world and understanding the near history becomes good antitode for peeking into the mind set of people today. All the recent terror events have their origin in the middle east, a part of the world which was interestingly much more calmer 200-300 years ago under the Ottoman then it is now. McCarthy by style can at times sound more like he is writing about polymer chemistry due to his attention to numerical detail in historical research but i personally think this is something very much missing in history in general. Death & Exile also by te author led me to this book and i actually found it better, more readable. A good look into the last era of the Ottoman Empire, its highly multi-ethnic construct and their intricate social upheveal...
Rating: Summary: Rightful Recognition of the 'Turkish Holocaust' Review: Yet another brilliantly and scholarly written historical book about the 'Turkish Holocaust' by a great scholar. As abundantly demonstrated in the book, almost every single document regarding the Turkish history is related to the Armenian genocide of millions of Muslim and Jewish people in Russian Armenia and Eastern Anatolia between 1914 and 1920. The genocide by the Armenians perpetrated against the defenseless Moslem Azeri, Tartar, Turkish and Kurdish people is sufficiently reflected in historical documents. Even today over eighty five years later, the terrifying screams of the victims of these massacres can be heard. Ex-Soviet Armenian government got away with the genocide of 2.5 million Turkish men, women and children and is enjoying the fruits of that genocide. Russian Armenian-paid historical revisionists will not get away with the genocide's cover-up. The Turkish world will never forget to recall the silent memory of millions of Turkish and Jewish people cold-bloodedly slaughtered by the Armenians in Russian Armenia and Eastern Anatolia between 1914 and 1920. Yet despite the efforts of the ex-Soviet Armenian Government and its paid and revisionist organizations in U.S., in the last decades, thanks to the struggle of those whose closest ones have been systematically exterminated by the Armenians, the international wall of silence on this issue has begun to collapse, and consequently a number of governments and organizations have become supportive of the recognition of the Turkish Holocaust. According to a recent survey conducted in Turkey and Azerbaijan: "Most Disliked": Armenians -- 97%. And, one wonders why. Because the Russian Armenian government planned and carried out a 'Genocide' against its Muslim and Jewish subjects between 1914 and 1920. 2.5 million Turkish people were murdered and the remainder driven out of their homeland. After one thousand years, Turkish lands were empty of Turks, Azeris and Tartars. The survivors found a safe heaven in Turkey. Today, the ex-Soviet Armenian government rejects the right of the Turkish people to return to their historical lands occupied by ex-Soviet Armenia. Today, ex-Soviet Armenian government covers up the genocide perpetrated by their predecessors and is therefore an accessory to this crime against humanity. Ex-Soviet Armenian government must pay for their crime of genocide against the Muslims and Jews by admitting to the crime and making reparations to the victims of the 'Turkish Holocaust.' Plainly, Turkish people will have to come to terms with the fact that the world has its 'Turkish Holocaust' deniers, as it has its Jewish Holocaust deniers. But there can be no question of yielding any ground to them. The facts about the Armenian slaughtering of 2.5 million Muslim and Jewish people speak for themselves. Excellent job.
