Summary: Self-serving to the max!
Review: I have read the memoirs of dozens of high ranking German officers of WW2, and this was the most uninformative of them all. Although he does relate the military aspects of his career, it is intersperced with personal opinions and comments that are way off topic.

He is the epitamy of an elitist officer who thinks he is better than everyone else, especially his own subordinates. On many occasions he relates how he just had to get back to his temporary villa (oh yes, he only chose the finest estates as his HQ) after a hard day reviewing the front, so he can soak in a nice hot bath. This while his troops were getting shot at! Or how he had to take time out from the war to go on a walk in the woods or the fields or the seashore, etc. etc.

He also interspersed his memoirs with a diatribe against the German government, and made politically correct statements, many of which he could NOT have known about at the time he claims, and/or have been proven to be nothing more than pure fabrications since he wrote his memoirs thus proving himslef a liar!

He claims now to have been intimately involved with the planners of the assination attempt of Hitler, and says that he was investigated yet allowed to remain in command. This is shear nonsense, since everyone even suspected of being involved was at the very least relieved of command. Just another example of making himself look holier than thou.

He also on a number of occasions goes to great lengths to explain what the attributes are that the the best German officer must have, and never fails to mention that he of course has all of these attributes.

Every victory was of course the result of his superior knowledge, planning and leadership, yet each and every defeat was systematically blamed on others. He never ONCE took responsibility for any of his losses.

All in all this is the most self-serving drivel I have ever read from a German General. The only ones that might think this is a good book are those who have nothing to compare it to. This was a second class general and sorry excuse for an officer in general. One can only pity him.

Summary: An analytical view of command by a soldier doing his duty
Review: Senger was a professed Hitler secptic . Whilst there must be much post war revisionism, his analysis and commentary (he has a section at the end on why germany could never have won, ie it is too small a nation)and the fact that it was first published in 1960, gives authenticity to his views.

He starts with a brief account of his not eventfull part in the 1940 western campaign and his role as liaison to the italians. His first "active combat role" was in charge of the 17th Panzer in the attempted relief of stalingrad and aftermath. He then has a liaison role in Sicily, evacuates Corisica/ Sardinia followed by cassino and the retreat up Italy. His narrative is not only descriptive but also has insightful sections on tatical and operational considerations.

highly recommended.

Summary: An analytical view of command by a soldier doing his duty
Review: This is a book about how a just man fights an unjust war. General Frido Von Senger Und Etterlin details his triumphs, mistakes and thoughts in his very successful wartime career. In this books you will not find any of his ego, instead you will find the reflections of a bright, Christian man who did his best. He willingly tells of his failures as easily as his victories. This book is not only for the historian. It is for anyone who wants to understand what the mind and soul of a man endures as he undergoes long periods of trial. This often quoted book is a requirement for anyone who wants to understand the operational level of war while at the same time does not want to lose touch with the trenches. Don't pass this book up if you have the time to read it, you'll never put it done. It is a rare jewel known only to a precious few.

Summary: Hopeless book from a coward
Review: This is about the most outrageous nonsense I have read for a long time. A fictionalized autobiography from a self serving, cowardly, mediocre know-all general, one who spent his time looking for luxurious villas with nice views and fine wine cellars to enjoy while battle was in progress (during the Batlle of France), one who seldom was in the trenches with his soldiers, and one whom fought his wars miles behind the front, in resplendent luxury - in essence, the perfect caricature of a desk bound, high living, stupid staff officer.
