Summary: Ignorance of the Truth
Review: After you read Mr. Butch's review you should ask yourself this question: DOES it matter that there WERE Soviet spies infiltrating the highest reaches of the US government? Of course it does!!! That is the silliest thing I've ever heard.
Another question: Exaclty how many Soviet Spies did McCarthy discover? One or two? I feel as if you have no idea whatsoever. Further, you even admit that he did uncover Soviet spies; Soviet spies who were giving top secret information to a sadistic, brutal regime. A regime that kept the United States and other countries under the threat of "nuclear winter" for fifty years (just a side note-the Soviets discovered nuclear capability through Soviet Spies). Do you need to be reminded that the intentions of the "one or two," was to subvert the United States government. Another question: Does that mean anything to you? Had the Soviets succeded you'd be sitting in a Gulag right now dreaming of the good old days when one trailblazing American patriot tried to defeat the most evil regime that ever disgraced humanity.
To be sure, it does break my heart that some good people were forced to reveal their affinity for Stalin and were subseqently denied their God given right to make a movie or a TV show. I think even you'll admit that these unfortunate souls paid a much smaller price than the millions of people who were slaughtered by the Soviet Union.
One last question: Which one of the reviews actually mentions McCarthy? I really didn't notice one. Perhaps your misplaced hatred for a man who loved his country blinded you. Perhaps you falsely accused your fellow reviewers. Who knows what kind of negative impact this may have on their ability to write reviews in the future. At least try to read the book sir

Summary: Dude, where's my evidence?
Review: Here's an example of the quality of work you'll find in this book:
P.140: "Romerstein (the author) pointed out that (Alger) Hiss was an agent not of KGB (NKVD) but of military intelligence (GRU).
P.512: (Regarding the Order of the Red Star) "Several NKVD agents who served in the United States during the war received this honor, including...Alger Hiss.
So which is it, guys? Please try to keep your unsubstantiated accusations straight.
The whole point of this book is to establish that the Venona Secrets (material from the Soviet Archives) prove the guilt of many of those accused of spying in the United States on behalf of the U.S.S.R.
So, according to the authors, the Venona Secrets "are the details of the spying activities" of Hiss and others.
Here is the one and only thing the authors provide in reference to Venona and Hiss:
1. One of the transcripts indicates that an agent known as "Ales" had attended the Allied Conference at Yalta in 1945 and had then flown to Moscow.
2. Hiss had been at the Yalta Conference and then flown to Moscow.
3. Therefore, (p.136) "one sees clearly that "Ales" was Alger Hiss.

Sorry guys, Hiss was innocent, but you can keep trying if it makes you happy.

Summary: get a grip!
Review: I actually have not read this book, but have been dissuaded from doing so by the prior reviews. To future readers of the reviews, I ask: what does the fact that there really WERE soviet spies have to do with McCarthy? Shouldn't it be clear to everyone (since at most 1 or 2 of the people he accused had any actual connection to the soviets) that we can, and should, despise McCarthy for his grandstanding and destruction of the lives of innocent people, while also condemning the real spies?

from the other reviews, it appears to me that the authors don't think so, and that's why I have decided not to read the book.

Summary: HOW CLOSE WE CAME HOW CLOSE ARE WE STILL
Review: I KNEW JUST ABOUT NOTHING OF THE ERA THAT I BELIEVED I KNEW. I HAD ACCEPTED THE MYTH OF MCCARHTYISM,THE IMPECABLE CHARACTER AND INTEGRETY OF PRESIDENTS FDR,TRUMAN,THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY LEADERSHIP WHOM IN LIGHT OF THE VERONA PROJECT NOW APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN THE DUPES AND ACCOMPLICES OF COMMUNISM. THE LIBERAL VIEWS THAT WERE ALLOWED TO PASS FOR TRUTH IN THE MOVIES AND PAPERS OF THE TIME. THE OFTEN QUOTED ,UNREFUTED AND UNSUBSTANIATED VIEWS FROM INTELLECTUALS OF LIBERAL POP ACADEMIA THAT WERE PUBLISHED BY THE CONSPIRATORIAL PRESS AS THE IMPARTIAL GOSPEL FROM ON HIGH , ALL OTHER VIEWS DROWNED OUT BY THE BIG LIE PERPETRATED OVER AND OVER AGAIN AS IT IS STILL DONE TODAY. I WAS TOLD OF THE NAZI PROPAGANDA MACHINE BUT NEVER TOLD OF THE LEFTIST PROPAGANDA APPARATUS THAT WAS ALIVE AND WELL IN AMERICA THEN AS WELL AS NOW. SO MUCH AKIN TO THE GRIEVER WORMTONGUE CHARACTER IN THE EPIC TALES OF TOLKEN. IN READING THE ACTUAL DECIFERED ACCOUNTS OF ESPIONAGE PERPITERATED AGAINST US BY THOSE OF OUR FELLOWS, WHO BELIEVED IN AND STILL CLINGING TO THE RELIGION INVOLVING THE EMPERORS NEW CLOTHS OF THE LIBERAL ELITIST COMMUNISTIC WORLD GOVERNMENT, AKA THE "USEFUL IDIOTS" AKA "FELLOW TRAVELERS" AND THEIR SOVIET MASTERS NOW TURNED "ONE WORLDERS"AKA "FABIAN SOCIALIST"
I THANK GOD THAT THE VERONA PROJECT VINDICATES THE VALIENT MESENGERS THAT WARNED AND DEFENDED US, WHO WERE RIDICULED,DISGRACED AND IGNORED AT GREAT COST TO THEMSELVES AND THE AMERICAN PEOPLE . THE VERONA FILES ARE THE EVIDENCE TO CONVICT AND SHAME THOSE WHO PERPITRATED AND DENIED THE ATTEMPTED OVERTHROW OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, TO CONVICT AND SHAME THOSE THAT PROMOTED AND DEFENDED THE TRAITORS AND STILL HONOR THEIR LIBERAL ORIENTATION.

I NOW BELIEVE THAT THE REASON THE CULTURAL REVOLUTIONS AND PURGES OF COMMUNIST CHINA AND RUSSIA,THE SHOW TRIALS OF SUPPOSED COUNTER REVOLUTIONARIES BY UNCLE JOE AND CHAIRMAN MAO, ESTIMATED IN THE DEATHS OF MILLIONS OF THEIR OWN PEOPLE, MAY HAVE TAKEN PLACE BECAUSE THE AMERICAN/WESTERN INTELLECUAL,LIBERAL ILITISTS OF THE USEFUL IDIOT PERSUASION WERE SO SUCCESSFUL AT SUBVERTING THEIR OWN GOVERNMENTS AND NATIONS. IT BECAME CLEAR THAT THE SAME INTELLECTUALS,PROFESSIONALS.TEACHERS,LIBERAL LEADERS
WITHIN THE SOVIET AND CHINESE COMMUNIST SOCIETIES COULD BE SUBVERTED BY THE WESTERN DEMOCRACIES A RISK THAT WAS CRUSHED IN DIRECT PROPORTION TO THE SUCCESS OF THE USEFUL IDIOTS IN THE WESTERN UPPER SOCIETIES. BE THAT AS IT MAY.
I ASK THAT WE AS A GREAT PEOPLE BLESSED BY GOD, REREAD HISTORY IN LIGHT OF "THE VERONA PROJECT" AND OTHER BOOKS LIKE "USEFUL IDIOTS", "TREASON", " SHUT UP AND SING" ,"WITNESS", "THE SAVAGE NATION", "THE BIBLE" WE SHOULD THANK GOD PERSONALLY BECAUSE WE REALLY CAME CLOSE TO LOSING THE FAITH BABY!.
I DO NOT APPOLOGIZE FOR THIS REVIEW BECAUSE I AM AN AMERICAN I AM NOT ASHAMED OF MY GOD OR MY COUNTRY.I AM PROUD OF MY FELLOW AMERICANS AND THE STRENGTH OF OUR DERTERMINATION AND STRENGHT. MAY WE LEARN FROM OUR MISTAKES AND BE EVER VIGILENT FOR THE PRICE OF FREEDOM CAN BE NO OTHER. BY MR.M.LEMOS :AN HISPANIC AMERICAN

Summary: Provides evidence of Soviet agents who worked in the US
Review: If you would like a sound one-volume tell-it-like-it-was narrative of the Soviet spying in the U.S. through the Korean War, this volume is for you. The authors demonstrate using the Venona documents declassified in 1995 that what was told by Whittaker Chambers, Elizabeth Bentley and others was the truth. They go beyond that and show how high government officials such as Harry Hopkins tried to work the lend lease program to get Uranium for the Soviets to aid their nuclear program.

They also take us through the spies that were placed in the OSS (the forerunner of the CIA), and how they used their own spy network to go after dissidents outside the USSR including the murder of Leon Trotsky. Another section talks about journalists who either supported the Soviets directly in their reporting such as I.F. Stone or were compromised by having plants on their staff such as Walter Lippmans secretary.

The authors also make a case the Robert Oppenheimer directly aided the Soviets. You can weigh all this evidence for yourself. There are many notes, and dozens of photographic reprints selected from the thousands of Venona documents. A few of the key characters are shown in photographs. One of my favorites is Harry Dexter Whites (a Soviet agent in the treasury) credentials for the founding conference of the United Nations signed by Alger Hiss (a Soviet agent in the State Department).

This book is not the only book on Venona, but it is very readable and is very direct in expressing the authors belief in what story the evidence tells us. You are free to make up your own mind, of course. But I think this is pretty compelling stuff.

Summary: Soviet Spies and US Traitors
Review: Over the years there has been a vast array of books about Soviet espionage and its American helpers: Alger Hiss, the Rosenbergs, Harry Dexter White, Nathan Gregory Silvermaster, and so many more.

No matter the evidence, some members of the US press and intelligentsia refused to come to grips with the truth and admit that some of their great liberal heroes were actually agents of Stalin.

Herbert Romerstein's book proves once and for all that they were all guilty as charged. During the Second World War the United States intercepted and decoded secret soviet radio transmissions from Moscow to their agents in America. Using these documents, and materials from Soviet archives, Romerstein narrates the incredible story of just how deeply KGB agents penetrated the American government to its highest levels.

Romerstein's encyclopedic knowledge of the subject, based on years of research and study, puts the entire tragic story into historical pespective and makes fascination reading. If you are going to buy just one book of history this year, this is it!

Summary: Good history
Review: This is an inside story by two US espionage agents and experts who are knowledgeable about the espionage activities of the war and who also reviewed the US code breaking of Soviet espionage messages during the war. . One of the gems it reveals is that President FDR was gullible and had several advisors who were Soviet agents. Stalin was afraid of a two front war in Europe and with Japan in the Pacific. He composed an insulting message for his agents to present to FDR who sent as is it to the Japanese government. This provoked the war in the Pacific. Had this not been done, The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor would have been done much later or not at all.

Summary: Good book on Soviet spying
Review: Warning the book has a tendency of jumping to conclusions. I doubt for example that the start of the US war with Japan had much to do with Soviet spies.

However overall the book makes a very good case that the Venona conclusively proved the guilt of such traitors like Alger Hiss and Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. Also that several others such as I.F. Stone was a paid Communist spy.

However I do not think the book shows conclusive evidence that Robert Oppenheimer was a spy. Although it certain does present a good case that he might have been.

If you are interested in Soviet spying in the US this book is probably as good as you can get.
