Summary: An excellent history of homicide in NYC
Review: One of the country's leading quantitative historians examines the patterns of homicide in NYC since the late 1700s. The story is a complex one, and the patterns are far from obvious. This sort of careful work on violence in early America contrasts sharply with popular, but largely false, history books on similar topics, such as Arming America by Michael Bellesiles. This is a serious work of quantitative history, not riveting to read, but well written nonetheless. The historical research is unmatched.
